During El Niño, heat can build up quickly inside a greenhouse.

Kapag kulang ang airflow, mas tumataas ang heat stress ng halaman, mas bumabagal ang recovery, at mas nagiging mahirap panatilihing stable ang growing environment.

That’s why ventilation should be checked before the hottest days arrive.
✅ Keep fans clean and working well
✅ Open vents properly
✅ Remove anything blocking airflow
✅ Check greenhouse pathways and side openings
✅ Use shade net wisely when needed
✅ Avoid trapping hot air inside the structure

Good airflow helps move excess heat away from the crop and can make the greenhouse environment more manageable.

But remember:
🌱 Shade and ventilation should work together.

Too much shade can reduce useful light, while poor ventilation can still leave hot air trapped inside.

The goal is balance.

During very hot days, direct sunlight can quickly heat reservoirs, NFT channels, growing boxes, and cups. Kapag umiinit ang root zone, mas madaling ma-stress ang halaman.

During El Niño, the root zone can heat up fast—so your growing media matters.

For many growers, cocopeat is one of the most practical choices during hot weather because it can help hold moisture longer while still supporting the roots well.

Meanwhile, media like rockwool, foam, or other exposed materials can still become problematic when directly exposed to heat, especially if the root zone is not shaded or protected.

That’s why the goal is not just to choose media—
the goal is to protect root-zone temperature and moisture.

✅ Use media that helps retain enough moisture

Sa hydroponics, water is everything.
Wala tayong soil na pwedeng humawak ng moisture para sa halaman. Kapag kulang ang tubig, may leak, o biglang nawalan ng supply sa mainit na araw, mabilis ma-stress ang crop.

Before the hottest months:
✅ Prepare a backup water supply
✅ Keep reservoirs covered
✅ Check tanks, pipes, fittings, and hoses for leaks
✅ Monitor reservoir level more often during hot days
✅ Keep pumps and filters clean and working properly

During extreme heat, plants can use water faster, so huwag umasa sa dating routine lang.

2️⃣ PROTECT YOUR SEEDS

Seeds are the start of every crop. During hot weather, poor storage can reduce seed quality and germination.

For Katanim growers, preparation starts even before sowing.
✅ Keep seeds sealed and dry
✅ Store them in a cool place
✅ For longer storage, use a ref or chiller when appropriate
✅ Avoid repeated exposure to heat and moisture

Important reminder: when taking seeds out of cold storage, let the sealed container warm closer to room temperature before opening. This helps reduce condensation that can introduce moisture.

Good storage today means better germination when it’s time to plant.

This is not a post to create fear.

This is a reminder for all Katanim growers that when it comes to agriculture, preparation is always better than rescue.

For the next 11 days, we will share one practical El Niño preparedness tip every day, especially for hydroponic, greenhouse, and urban growers.

We will talk about nutrients, seeds, water, growing media, insulation, ventilation, plant support, pest management, backup systems, EC and pH monitoring, and root-zone protection.

Some of these may look simple, but during prolonged heat, small preparations can make a big difference.

Our goal is not to panic-buy, overstock, or overreact.

Our goal is to:
Prepare early.
Grow wisely.
Protect our crops.
Reduce avoidable losses.

1️⃣ SECURE YOUR FERTILIZER / HYDROPONIC NUTRIENTS

Hindi ito para manakot—para makapaghanda tayo nang maaga.

El Niño itself does not automatically mean fertilizer shortage, pero during prolonged dry conditions, puwedeng sumabay ang pressure from global supply, imports, shipping, production, and export restrictions.

Para sa hydroponic grower, mahirap ang maubusan ng nutrients habang nasa kalagitnaan na ng crop cycle.
✅ Keep a reasonable buffer stock
✅ Check your inventory before peak heat
✅ Reorder early—huwag hintaying ubos na
✅ Avoid panic-buying or hoarding

NOW IN CDO!

After our Bukidnon farm visits, we are now here in Cagayan de Oro, meeting another grower who started his urban growing journey around 3 years ago.

One thing he shared from actual experience: too much heat is one of the biggest challenges in city growing. ☀️ And with that comes another serious problem — THRIPS.

So far, fungus has not been his main concern. His bigger challenge is insect pressure, especially thrips. This is exactly why proper pest management is very important in protected and urban growing.

For us at Katanim, Bio-Knockout is our RESCUE insect-control solution when pest pressure is already active and the usual maintenance program needs stronger support.

For active infestation, our practical program is 2 ml/L, sprayed at night for 3 consecutive nights, and it can be extended up to 5 nights if the pressure is heavy.

For prevention, we use 1 ml/L weekly at night.
The important lesson is this: don’t wait until the leaves are already badly damaged before taking action. The Katanim approach is always PROACTIVE — observe early, respond early, and protect the crop before the problem becomes difficult to control.

Every farm visit teaches us something different. Some growers struggle with fungus. Some with heat. Some with insects. That’s why actual field experience, observation, and proper management matter so much.

Done, Bukidnon!

After our visit in Malinao, Kalilangan, we continued our journey to Malaybalay to visit a pepper grower. One of the interesting practices we saw here was the direct sowing of pepper seeds straight into the grow bags—a simple approach that gave us another opportunity to observe, learn, and exchange ideas about crop establishment, irrigation, nutrition, and greenhouse management.

And look at those peppers! From green, yellow, to beautiful red fruits—seeing productive plants inside the greenhouse reminds us that every farm has something valuable to teach. Farming is always a continuous process of learning, testing, improving, and sharing experiences with fellow growers.

From Malaybalay, we proceeded to Manolo Fortich to meet another grower, this time focusing on lettuce hydroponics. Another farm, another system, another learning experience.

This trip is not only about visiting farms. It is about connecting with growers, understanding their actual challenges, sharing practical knowledge, and building a stronger farming community.
