Those claims—widely circulated online—are the heart of the controversy. For many believers, the tension isn’t personal animosity; it’s theological.

Baptism represents repentance and new life. Scripture teaches that turning to Christ involves a decisive break from sin—not perfection overnight, but a real change of direction. Critics argue that when someone with such a recent, highly publicized sexual history is baptized, the Church must ask whether repentance is genuine or performative.

Others warn that demanding proof beyond time and fruit turns grace into gatekeeping.

Biblically, both truths must be held together:
Grace is free.
Repentance is real.
Fruit takes time.

If Lilly Phillips’ baptism marks a sincere turning from her former life, Christians are called to pray—not posture. If not, time will reveal it. Either way, baptism is not a publicity shield. It is a covenant that will be tested.
