“I seek work that has an impact on other people’s lives and in the community.” — Dr. Ea Kristine Clarisse Tulin-Escueta
After completing her postdoctoral fellowship at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, a Harvard Medical School teaching hospital in Boston, Dr. Ea Kristine Clarisse Tulin-Escueta chose to return to Leyte and continue serving through science.
Now back at Visayas State University, Dr. Tulin-Escueta teaches biotechnology and helps train future Filipino scientists. Her work in glycobiology focuses on glycans—sugar molecules that can hold vital clues about health, blood, cancer, and other diseases.
During her fellowship, she worked on developing antibodies that target glycans found in blood and cancer cells, with potential uses in diagnostics and therapies.
Her journey in science began at VSU, where she graduated as class valedictorian in 2016. She later pursued graduate studies at the Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology in Japan before advancing her research training in the United States.
Dr. Tulin-Escueta has also continued contributing to international biomedical research. In 2025, she led a VSU-linked study with collaborators from Harvard Medical School and the University of Bern that examined how blood group O antigens appear in normal tissues and tumors.
From Leyte to Japan, Boston, and back home, her journey carries a powerful message: Filipino scientists can build global expertise while choosing to bring their knowledge back to the communities that need it most.
