Scientists from the World Institute of Kimchi have discovered that a probiotic bacterium found in kimchi may help remove harmful nanoplastics from the body.

Researchers studied 𝘓𝘦𝘶𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘰𝘴𝘵𝘰𝘤 𝘮𝘦𝘴𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘰𝘪𝘥𝘦𝘴 CBA3656, a lactic acid bacterium isolated from kimchi, and found it strongly binds to tiny plastic particles called nanoplastics. In lab tests simulating the human intestine, the strain maintained a 57% binding efficiency, far outperforming a comparison strain that dropped to only 3%. Experiments in mice also showed that animals given the probiotic excreted more than twice as many nanoplastics in their f***s.

Scientists say the findings suggest fermented-food microbes could become a biological tool for reducing nanoplastic buildup and protecting human health.
