Planting Trees as a Lasting Tribute 🌳β™₯️
________

Back in September 2021, my cousin RK unfortunately got infected by the Delta variant. In less than a week, he sadly succumbed to the virus and passed away at a very young age 😭.

Before his passing, RK became a certified pandemic "Plantito"! πŸ‘¨β€πŸŒΎ He owned and took very good care of around 60+ fruit trees, while doing urban gardening at his family's garage πŸ₯‘πŸ‹πŸŒΏ

RK's aunties and other housemates did everything to preserve these tangible memories of RK for two years 🌱. But through time, most trees slowly withered as fruit trees can only survive on pots for a few years πŸ—“.

This is where our team decided to transport, transplant and preserve most of RK's fruit trees at BuKIDS 🌳🚜

We started our tiny seed library from our best growing harvests last summerβ˜€οΈ. This sustainable farm practice let's us cultivate and increase crop varieties across the year 🌱 πŸ—“ .

Thanks to our farmers, they always prioritize saving local organic seeds like okra, mustasa, sitaw, kalabasa, upo, patola, corn, just to name a few πŸ₯¬πŸŒ½πŸ₯’.

SEED SAVING is also a cheaper alternative than buying commercial seeds from local agriculture shops 18km away from our farm! Through this, time, money and energy saved by our farmers can be used for more crop and soil focused tasks such as watering, sowing, transplanting, mulching and composting. It ultimately makes our farm more self-sufficient! πŸ‘©β€πŸŒΎπŸ’ͺ

We hope to update our seed library with more time-tested heirloom seeds in the future! β€πŸ™πŸŒΏ

At BuKIDS, we fully utilize ripened coconuts that just fall from our trees. Husks are shredded and turned into a natural waste product called "coir" that serves as our organic mulch. 🌴πŸ₯₯

Why is this very important to us?

COIR MULCH when placed on top of each garden bed (after each crop cycle) helps us retain moisture of the soil from the intense heat, suppresses weeds from heavy rains, and improves overall fertility and plant nutrition when coco fibers decompose.

This in turn helps our farmers improve and maintain our soil's overall health. Resulting to a more bountiful harvest each week. πŸ₯¬πŸ†πŸ…

While we try to teach our children all about life, the farm teaches us what life's all about. πŸ™‹β€β™‚οΈ

At BuKIDS, we try to immerse young KIDS on the daily grind of natural farming. Making them value the hard work that all farmers have to go through each day, so that most of us will have fresh food on our tables. πŸ₯¦πŸ₯šπŸ†

Meet BuKIDS' local farmer, Ate Jelyn.

She diligently and wholeheartedly sows, grows and harvests an assortment of in season crops, that we deliver each week to our committed subscribers in Manila. This ensures that all her hardwork at the beginning of the growing season is properly compensated, and not put to waste.

This is how we (at BuKIDS) supports CSA or "Community Supported Agriculture". We pave the way for our consumers (our subscribers) to directly connect with their producers (our local farmers).

Most importantly, CSA enables us to fulfil our simple mission of educating Pinoy Urban KIDS about their food source - Knowing exactly HOW their food is naturally grown, and WHO diligently grows it.

Through this, we hope that future generations make better food choices at a young age! πŸ‘©β€πŸŒΎβ€πŸŒΏ
