Coffee's Not a Bean — It's a Fruit.
Despite being called "coffee beans," what you’re grinding for your morning brew isn’t actually a bean at all.
Coffee comes from the pit — or seed — of a fruit called a coffee cherry. These cherries grow on coffee plants, with each fruit typically containing two seeds nestled inside.
Once harvested, the seeds are processed, roasted, and brewed into the coffee we know and love.
This botanical detail means coffee is closer to stone fruits, like peaches or cherries, than legumes, which true beans belong to.
The next time you sip your espresso, you can impress friends (or maybe annoy them?) with the fact that you’re technically enjoying a tropical fruit drink.
