The World Health Organization recommends a minimum of 9 square meters of green space per person within a 15-minute walking distance. Metro Manila? It only has about 5 square meters per person โ€” well below that standard.

But some urban planners put the real number even lower. Landscape architect Paulo Alcazaren estimates Metro Manila is closer to just 1 square meter per person โ€” and that's being generous.

The City of Manila alone would need 26 more Rizal Parks just to meet the WHO's recommendation.

And it's getting worse, not better. Since 1969, the ratio of open space per 1,000 population in Metro Manila has fallen by 75% โ€” from 0.9 down to just 0.2.

The rapid growth of commerce and population has pushed public parks and open spaces further and further to the wayside. As land became more valuable, green spaces lost the bidding war to condos, malls, and commercial developments.

The Philippines has 850 malls but only 100 national parks. We didn't end up here by accident.

Urban planner Felino Palafox Jr. put it bluntly: "Because we don't have safe, clean, convenient open spaces and parks, the malls have now become park and playground, the social interaction area."

And here's the painful irony: Manila's green space is a mere 0.03% of its land area โ€” compared to Singapore, where 47% of its land is green space, and New York City, which has 14%.

Yes โ€” and it's been on the books for decades.

Under Presidential Decree 957, every subdivision plan must allocate at least 30% of the gross area for open spaces, including parks and recreational areas. These areas are intended for public use by residents and cannot be converted for commercial purposes without approval.

A later law, Presidential Decree 1216, further strengthened this by requiring that upon completion, roads, sidewalks, and playgrounds must be donated by the developer to the city or municipality โ€” and it is ๐˜ฎ๐˜ข๐˜ฏ๐˜ฅ๐˜ข๐˜ต๐˜ฐ๐˜ณ๐˜บ for local governments to accept them.

So the law exists. The problem? Enforcement is weak, LGUs are overwhelmed, and the Supreme Court has ruled that LGUs cannot acquire ownership of subdivision open spaces unless there is a formal, written deed of donation duly accepted โ€” meaning without proper documentation, those spaces remain legally private property no matter how long they've been treated as public.

In short: the law is there, but the loopholes are real โ€” and developers and LGUs alike have been slow to close them.

Parks and green spaces are not luxuries โ€” they are essential components of sustainable city living, offering benefits from enhanced public health to mitigated environmental challenges.

Cities could start by converting unused parking lots, abandoned factories, and idle commercial land into pocket parks, community gardens, and recreational spaces. The good news: some LGUs are already doing exactly this.

Families shouldn't have to drive an hour โ€” or spend money at a mall โ€” just so their kids can run around safely. A well-maintained neighborhood park does something a mall can never replicate: it builds community for free.

Johnny Depp and a one-eyed horse named Goldeneye.

What Happened to Johnny Deppโ€™s Horse Goldeneye? The One-Eyed Star Weโ€™ll Never Forget

In 1999, Johnny Depp walked off the set of Sleepy Hollow with more than just a lead role. He walked away with a one-eyed horse named Goldeneye.

The Andalusian gelding, known as โ€œGunpowderโ€ in the film, was bound for euthanasia after production wrapped. But Depp, drawn to underdogs and misfits both on-screen and off, couldnโ€™t let that happen. He adopted Goldeneye on the spot. The horse found a home on Deppโ€™s 41-acre Kentucky farm, a sanctuary named after his late mother: Betty Sueโ€™s Family Farm.

For years, Goldeneye lived out his days on that bluegrass pasture surrounded by rolling hills, white fences, and the quiet life away from Hollywood flashbulbs. The story of their bond made headlines and melted hearts. A movie star saving a movie horse? It doesnโ€™t get better than that.

But in 2020, Johnny Depp quietly sold the farm for $1.35 million. And ever since, the fate of Goldeneye has remained a mystery.

No public record. No Instagram update. No fan tweet. Nothing.

Did he sell the horse with the property? Did Goldeneye pass away peacefully before the sale, having reached an advanced age? Or was he relocated to another of Deppโ€™s estates, perhaps his island in the Bahamas or a ranch far from public view?

We may never know for sure. But hereโ€™s what we do know:
โ€ข Goldeneye was already an adult when adopted in 1999, making him at least 21 by 2020. Thatโ€™s near the upper end of a horseโ€™s typical lifespan.
โ€ข Depp was known to be deeply attached to him. The idea of simply leaving him behind seems out of character.
โ€ข No credible reports place Goldeneye anywhere after 2020.

In a world where horses are often bought, sold, or discarded like equipment, Goldeneye stood out. He was a living reminder of compassion in the film industry. And while the silence surrounding his fate may suggest a quiet passing, it also reflects the privacy Depp has always maintained about those he lovesโ€”human or horse.

So hereโ€™s to Goldeneye. To the one-eyed horse who stole the show and Johnny Deppโ€™s heart.

If you know more about his story, or have a photo or memory to share, drop it in the comments. Letโ€™s keep his legacy alive, one horse-loving heart at a time. ๐Ÿด๐Ÿ’”
