A Blessed Sunday to my fellow God's Powerful Champions!🙏🤗💟
"Make it a habit to affirm at least one person everyday, starting with yourself."- Fr. Jerry Orbos, SVD

MOMENTS by Fr. Jerry Orbos, SVD

The story is told about a little girl who was asked how the church service was. After some thought, she said: “The music was nice, but the commercial was too long.”

* * *
In today’s gospel (Mk. 6, 1-6a), the townmates of Jesus admired His preaching in their synagogue, but went on to take offense at Him because they knew His humble beginnings, and they questioned His credibility, His family, His qualifications, etc. May we not become judgmental of others!

* * *
Yes, but… all of us tend to have this doubting and questioning attitude, in one way or another. Normal. And even necessary. However, if it becomes the overriding attitude in our whole life, we may end up cynical and critical of everything and of everyone. Let not our questioning and doubts rob us of the beauty of life and the goodness of people.

* * *
It is easier to doubt than to believe. Choose to believe anyway. It is easier to criticize than to encourage. Choose to encourage anyway. It is easier to be proud than to be humble. Choose to be humble anyway. It is easier to be sad than to be happy. Choose to be happy anyway. It’s your call. It’s your choice. It’s your life.

* * *
Instead of being judgmental, why don’t you and I take the risk of being affirmative and appreciative of other people? Make it a habit to affirm at least one person every day, starting with yourself.

* * *
God took a risk on us when he created us, and He continues to do so. He even risked His only begotten Son to save us. In spite of our poor response to His call, He continues to take a risk on us because He loves us. A foolish God? No, a loving God!

* * *
I shared the “Paper Story” (Kwento ng Papel, Kwento ng Buhay) in my FB/YouTube: “Fr. Jerry Orbos, SVD.” Life is not and need not be complicated if we know how to be humble and simple like an ordinary piece of paper. May we learn to take the road of humility and simplicity, the road that leads us to the Way, the Truth, and the Life. Yes, we have much to learn from simple people and simple things… Like a simple piece of paper.

Watch it here: https://youtu.be/-KEr588H1IQ

* * *
Sharing with you a beautiful song entitled “Grace” (by Laura Story). The first line of the song goes: “My heart is so proud, my mind is so unfocused; I see the things you do through me, as great things I have done…” How foolish and how proud of us when we forget God in our so-called achievements! But it is so assuring, too, that God always forgives and understands: “My child, I love you; and as long as you’re seeking my face, you’ll walk in the power of my daily sufficient grace.” How consoling that this “foolish God” who never stops taking a risk on us, continues to understand and love us, no matter what.

* * *
God has the right to be judgmental but He does not judge us. We have no right to be judgmental, but we continue to judge left and right. Don’t take the road of being proud, judgmental, critical, and disrespectful of others.

* * *
“He was amazed at their lack of faith.” May this not be said of us after all the blessings, forgiveness, and provisions we have received from God all these years. Let us ask the Lord to increase our faith so that we can be faithful to Him even when, especially when, we encounter trials, sickness, disappointments, rejections, failures of any sort. It is especially at such times that we should not end up being judgmental even of God Himself.

* * *
A moment with the Lord: Lord, forgive us for being judgmental of others, and even of You. Amen.

A Blessed Sunday, everyone!

Let's B.T.S. (BELIEVE. TRUST. SURRENDER.) everything to the Lord!😊

MOMENTS by Fr. Jerry Orbos, SVD

Imagine my shock when I received this text message: “Fr. Ric had a stroke. He is at the Arlington Funeral Home.” I was filled with sadness and disbelief with the thought that my classmate was gone. My sorrow turned to joy when another text message said: “Fr. Ric is OK. He had a stroke while he was saying Mass at the Arlington Funeral Home.” He whom I thought was dead, was alive!

* * *
In today’s gospel (Mark 5, 21-43), Jesus raised a 12-year-old girl from death to life. He just took the child by the hand, and said to her: “Talitha koum” (little girl arise), and the little girl arose immediately and walked around. Wow. Alleluia!

* * *
“Do not be afraid; just have faith.” The faith of a person, plus the faith of the people around her/him is important for healing to happen. Notice how the Lord put out the unbelieving crowd, and took in only Peter, James, and John, together with the child’s mother and father to accompany Him. We need people who have faith to accompany us in our journey. We need to shut out negative people who bring us down, and give us hopelessness and doubts.

* * *
Yesterday, I had a Zoom Mass for the 40th day death anniversary of Twinkle and also of her husband, Elmer. They left behind their 10-year-old daughter, Sophia, their only child. I was crying deep inside as I talked with her, but I was filled with hope and joy when I heard a child who was so optimistic and so trusting. “I am OK. I know God is with me. And my Lola, and the family of Papa and Mama will take care of me.” Words from a brave girl. Hurting, yes, but believing in love, still.

* * *
Choose to believe, not doubt; Choose to believe that the people you love, love you; Choose to believe that things will be well; Choose to believe that people are basically good; Choose to believe in yourself; Choose to believe in goodness, and no matter what, in God.

* * *
His Excellency, Jose Cardinal Advincula, the archbishop of Manila chose “Audiam” (That I may listen) as his motto and resolve. Humbly saying that he is “clueless” about what’s up ahead, we are confident that he who knows how to listen to the Lord, and to his own flock, will end up serving them well. “Trust the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding” (Prov. 3,5).

* * *
May we listen to the Lord in all the events that are unfolding during this pandemic. May we listen to the voices and cries of people around us. May we listen to the voice of conscience within us. May we also listen to Mother Nature, and to God’s words in the Scriptures.

* * *
The word of the Lord is the buoy that lifts us up and keeps us afloat. When you feel down and out, let the Lord speak to you, and listen to Him, and He will show you the way you need to take, the truth you need to believe, and the life you need to live.

* * *
ICU case: Whenever you encounter a difficult person in your life, treat him/her not as one to be hated or avoided, but one who needs Intensive Care and Understanding. And whenever you encounter any temptation, treat it as an ICU moment, with Intensive Caution and Urgency. Be careful, pray, and flee!

* * *
“Chil chon phal gi.” (Korean proverb that means: fall down seven times, rise up eight times.) May we not get discouraged whenever we encounter failures or disappointments. God counts not the falls and the failures, but the rising up and the moving on.

* * *
Think about this: The best way to age gracefully is to age gratefully. Remember, whatever is your altitude, gratitude is the best attitude.

* * *
A moment with the Lord: Lord, help us to rise again, and again, and again. Amen.

MOMENTS by Fr. Jerry Orbos, SVD

The story is told about a husband who planted an atis tree for his talkative wife because he heard that no one can talk while eating atis because of its many seeds. After patiently waiting for a year, he excitedly harvested the first atis, but to his dismay, it had no seeds. He planted the seedless atis variety!

* * *
In today’s gospel (Mk. 4, 26-34), Jesus compares the kingdom of God to seeds scattered on the land that sprout and grow of their own accord. He also compared it to a mustard seed, the smallest of all the seeds that grows to become the largest of plants. The kingdom of God has power of its own and bears fruits wherever it is sown.

* * *
On the other hand, there is also the kingdom of the evil one that has scattered the virus of COVID-19 which is invisible, and has the power to kill wherever it is sown. We have a choice: to belong to the kingdom of God with our good deeds, or to belong to the kingdom of the evil one with our bad deeds.

* * *
Someone rightly pointed out that as COVID-19 is highly contagious, so is kindness, generosity, joy, optimism, and positivity. Let’s all be carriers of the values of the kingdom of God, especially this time of our lives.

* * *
“You can’t wait until life is not hard anymore before you decide you can be happy.” Inspiring words from 30-year-old Jane Marczewski (Nightbirde) who has a 2-percent chance to live because of cancer. She got the golden buzzer from Simon Cowell on “America’s Got Talent” with her original song “It’s OK.” She got the admiration, respect, and gratitude of so many lonely, hurting, sick, and despondent people all over the world with her message of hope and joy amid tribulations.

* * *
As a little boy, I was fascinated with the story of Johnny Appleseed who walked all over America scattering apple seeds wherever he went, filling the whole place with apple trees that bore fruits for people who did not even know him. Yes, we just sow the seeds, and we don’t have to be around when the harvesting comes.

* * *
In this life, we may not get to enjoy the fruits of our labor, but we consider it joy enough that we were given the opportunity to labor so that others can enjoy the fruits.

* * *
There are two trees in front of the Mission House that might have a message for us: The first one is a tall bignay tree that is nice looking and gives a good shade, but has not borne fruits all these years; the other one is a lowly guava tree that is generous with fruits the whole year through to the delight of anyone who passes by, even birds from the sky. Which tree are you?

* * *
“You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you to go and bear fruit, fruit that will last” (Jn. 15, 16). Yes, we are called to bear fruits, to be productive, but not only with the works of our hands, but also with the love of our hearts.

* * *
I am writing this column today, the Feast of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, and our Independence Day. I ended up singing with all my heart: “Ave, Ave, Ave Maria… We pray for our country, the land of our birth; we pray for all nations that peace be on earth.”

* * *
June is the month of the three holiest hearts: the Sacred Heart of Jesus; the Immaculate Heart of Mary; the Most Chaste Heart of St. Joseph. Though we may not even come close to their holiness, let us continue to strive to make our hearts be like theirs. As long as we keep trying, God is pleased, and will supply whatever is lacking.

* * *
Think about this: “Beauty is not lost as we get older. It just moves from the face to the heart.”

* * *
A moment with the Lord: Lord, help us to sow good seeds and loving deeds. Amen.
