TUBURAN, Cebu — The Philippines’ organic agriculture industry is gaining momentum as farmers, consumers, and policymakers view sustainable production as both a market opportunity and a pathway to stronger rural livelihoods.
In Cebu, Tuburan Coffee is helping lead that shift as the country’s first certified organic coffee brand, using sustainable production and agroforestry to build a model that could be replicated as national coffee output expands.
Transitioning to organic farming requires patience. Tuburan’s shift involved rigorous soil testing and years of waiting for previously applied synthetic inputs to dissipate.
“That's why we're 100-percent organic,” Jamaica B. Diamante, chief operating officer of Tuburan Coffee, said during a recent media launch.
“We're not only focusing on organic fertilizer, but we're also focusing on agroforestry, which is one of the better ways of improving our coffee since it's a shaded crop.”
The farming system integrates companion trees, including Narra, to provide shade. This moderates temperatures and slows cherry maturation, allowing sugars to develop while creating a diverse farm ecosystem.
Marco Schlüter, director for strategy and international affairs at Naturland, sees the Philippines as fertile ground for a broader organic movement. Naturland works with local organic farmers and participates in national efforts to strengthen the sector.
“With all the potential that is here from the strong grassroots movement, we have the opportunity to give independence to farmers here in the Philippines,” Schlüter said.
For an archipelagic nation where farmers face high costs for synthetic inputs, organic production reduces reliance on expensive imports while unlocking premium market pricing.
Tuburan’s growth is expected to accelerate through the Department of Agriculture’s Coffee Industry Development Office (CIDO), created in 2026 to centralize coffee programs, funding, and strategy.
Its first Visayas office was established in Tuburan, supporting thousands of farmers across 34 barangays.
