A rareity in this day and age of hybrid and genetically modified corn, the local purple corn in the Philippines includes heirloom varieties like "Tapul" corn, which has historical roots tied to the galleon trade and is adapted to local wet climates.

Rich in health-boosting antioxidants called anthocyanins, it is grown locally and valued for its deep color, nutrition, and distinct nutty flavor.

Grown in parts of the Visayas and regions across the country, packed with anthocyanins (giving it the dark pigment), which offer anti-inflammatory properties and support heart and kidney health.
