Exactly a decade ago, this place became our home for a week during our first International Farm Tourism gathering. It was in this conference where we listened to inspiring speakers, exchanged ideas, and dreamed of what Coron Natural Farms could one day become.
More than the lessons from the conference, it was this place itself that deeply influenced us. Its warmth, simplicity, and peaceful spirit became one of the inspirations behind the design and construction of our farmhouse in Coron.
Now, ten years later, being back here feels like returning to a place that never lost its charm. The moment you sit down, time seems to slow. Your body naturally wants to rest, breathe, and reflect. In the mornings, the sun rises directly to this open space, while birds hop from one flowering tree to another, adding life and music to the quiet surroundings.
What makes this place even more special is sharing it with our dear friends, Hans and Cherie. They have always spoiled us from ingress to egress, paying attention to even the smallest details and making every stay unforgettable. They are truly amazing hosts, and their warmth is what gives this place its soul.
We are so blessed to have them — more than friends, they are family. Every moment spent with them, whether at their farm, home, or camps, has always been a gift we treasure.

RUNOFF AND EROSION CONTROL COMPARISON
This technical model illustrates the dramatic difference between natural land degradation and engineered soil conservation. It uses a split-view physical prototype to demonstrate how different land management strategies—or the lack thereof—impact the movement of water and the structural integrity of a slope. By contrasting a raw, exposed surface with a terraced, vegetated one, the image highlights how human intervention can mitigate environmental damage caused by heavy rainfall.

KEY COMPONENTS & FEATURES
• Unmanaged Slope (Left Side): This section depicts a high-risk area with no protective cover. Large, deep eroded gullies (indicated by brown arrows) show how unchecked runoff cuts through soil, leading to significant land loss and sedimentation downstream.
• Managed Slope (Right Side): This section demonstrates a multi-layered conservation strategy:
• Contour Curves: The slope is broken into horizontal "steps" or terraces that follow the natural elevation, breaking the momentum of downward water flow.
• Live Barriers: Thick rows of vegetation (shrubs and grasses) act as biological filters and physical obstacles to trap soil.
• Vegetation Cover: The use of mulch, leaf litter, and ground plants protects the soil surface from the direct impact of raindrops, which otherwise dislodges soil particles.
• Flow Indicators: Blue arrows on the managed side illustrate a slow, controlled infiltration and drainage pattern, whereas the large brown arrows on the unmanaged side indicate high-velocity, destructive runoff.

DESIGN SUMMARY
The model serves as a powerful educational tool for civil engineering and environmental management. It visually proves that while gravity naturally pulls water downward, the introduction of biological and structural "friction"—through terracing and planting—can transform a destructive force into a manageable resource. The managed system prioritizes soil stability and water absorption, whereas the unmanaged system leads to rapid landscape scarring and loss of arable land.

Part 1:
We’re starting to see the potential of our backyard here in Puerto Princesa—space for vegetables, fruit trees, and something more meaningful. But the soil tells the real story.
When it rains, it turns sticky, heavy, and waterlogged. When it dries, it becomes hard, compacted, and cracks open—a classic case of clayey, compacted soil with poor structure. Instead of forcing it to change, we chose to understand it first.
Through our learnings at Coron Natural Farms, we were reminded that healing the land takes patience, observation, and a bit of science—guided by nature itself.
Puerto Princesa is known as the City in the Forest, and so we begin aligning with that vision… A backyard food forest, where diversity thrives. A CA4OA Vegetable Garden, rooted in conservation agriculture and organic principles.
Not the usual clean and cleared garden—but one that mimics the forest: layered, mulched, alive.
We start from the ground up—feeding the soil with biodegradable materials, using what we already have from our backyard and kitchen waste.
Yes, this is also circular economy in action.
Because when the soil is restored, life follows.
This is more than gardening—
it’s a journey back to balance, abundance, and the way nature intended. 🌱

This CA4OA (Conservation Agriculture for Organic Agriculture) Vegetable Garden at Coron Natural Farms is a living testament that no matter how degraded the soil may be, when we work with nature as our blueprint, life finds a way to thrive.
It may not look “clean” or perfectly cleared like the typical vegetable gardens we are used to. With mulch on the ground, diverse crops growing together, and minimal tilling, it can appear wild—but this is exactly how nature intends it to be.
Like a forest, it thrives in its own balance.
When the soil is nurtured—not forced—the only direction for plants is to grow, flourish, and bear fruit.
Today, we harvest a variety of fresh vegetables daily—serving both our own table and our visiting guests who experience the beauty of farm-to-table living.
From soil once challenged… to abundance restored. Thank to the combined efforts of Team CNF and International Volunteers.
CNF is also a LiveLab of

Today at the farm felt extra special as we welcomed back one of our returning guests—this time bringing friends along to experience the journey.
Their day began on the open sea, paddling nearly 7 kilometers over 3 hours, slowly tracing a path from the ocean into the river systems of Coron. As the water narrowed, the landscape transformed—saltwater horizons giving way to dense corridors of mangroves of various species, towering old nipa palms, and quiet stretches of bamboo forests arching over the riverbanks.

It’s a rare kind of journey where every paddle stroke carries you deeper into a living ecosystem. The river eventually leads to Coron Natural Farms, where the ocean journey meets the land. Here they explored the farm, learning about our work in conservation agriculture and circular farming practices, experience farm to table lunch before settling into the slower rhythm of farm life.

Like many who arrive after the paddle, they discovered that one of the most beautiful parts of the experience is simply slowing down—resting in the shade, sharing stories, and enjoying the quiet countryside.

Our Ocean-to-River paddling tour is more than a route—it’s a passage through Coron’s living landscapes.
Thank you for making the journey with us once again. 🌱
