How to Detect Heat in Pigs: Signs That Your Female Pig Is Ready for Breeding

Knowing when a gilt or sow is on heat is one of the most important skills every pig farmer should have.

Breeding too early or too late can reduce conception rates and affect litter size.

One of the first signs you'll notice is a change in behaviour.

A pig on heat often becomes restless, more active than usual, and may spend more time sniffing around the pen. She may also mount other pigs or allow other pigs to mount her.

Her v***a usually becomes swollen, reddish, and may have a clear mucus discharge.

Some pigs also eat less during this period.

However, the most reliable sign is the standing reflex.

Place both hands firmly on her back, just in front of her hips, and apply gentle pressure.

If she stands completely still with her ears erect instead of moving away, she is in standing heat and is ready for breeding.

For the best conception rate, many farmers breed about 12–24 hours after the standing reflex is first observed, depending on whether it's a gilt or a sow.

Learning to detect heat correctly can improve conception rates, increase litter size, and help you get the most from your breeding animals.
