Burkina Faso reached food self sufficiency in 2025 after decades of import dependence and Traoré says that is what independence actually means.
For years this country bought its millet, its rice, its cooking oil from abroad. The money left. The decisions were made elsewhere. And when the price of wheat jumped in 2022, African kitchens felt it first. That is not sovereignty. That is a household budget controlled by foreign markets.
Traoré put it plain. As long as we do not have food independence, we cannot even talk about independence. Not flags. Not anthems. Not speeches at the United Nations. If you cannot feed your own people, you are managing someone else's dependency.
So they went to work. The Agricultural Offensive launched in 2023. Fertilizer production scaled up locally. Land was cleared and planted at a pace the country had not seen in a generation. Soldiers were deployed to farming. The state bought harvests directly from local producers at fixed prices. No middlemen from Paris or Dubai taking the margin.
And in 2025, Burkina Faso announced it had crossed into cereal self sufficiency. Not aid dependent. Not import dependent for its staple grains. Feeding itself.
This is what Thomas Sankara was trying to build before 1987. He said the same thing. Grow what you eat. Wear what you produce. He had three years. Traoré is working with more time and more guns pointed at him from every direction. JNIM wants the land burned. France wants the government gone. The World Bank wants its conditions met.
But the harvest came anyway.
Here is the uncomfortable truth for the rest of the continent. Burkina Faso is one of the poorest countries on earth by every Western metric. Yet it stopped begging for grain. Meanwhile Nigeria, the so called giant of Africa, still imports most of its food. Ethiopia, with all its fertile highlands, still needs emergency wheat shipments. Ghana, with its cocoa wealth, still cannot feed itself.
So what is the real measure of a nation? The size of its GDP on paper, or the ability to put food on its own table without asking permission?
