“An Essay to the Love of Ice Cream.”
Some of our favorite things come in smaller sizes.
A morsel of chocolate, a scoop of your favorite flavor of ice cream, or a fleeting moment we spend with our loved ones.
These days, we, the Havranek family, are seeing the value in those moments more than ever.
Within the confines of the south right corner of the big white house in Valencia lives Terry (our dad), alongside his dementia. His family, our devoted caretakers walk the journey with him. Carefully monitoring his mood swings every half-past the hour. A silent prayer with a clock tick; just one smile after an argument to take a bath would suffice.
But don’t feel sorry for us, our plight is no different than many. Instead we consider it a gift to share. To make others feel seen while validating our own experiences. Celebrating small wins despite our daily circus. Besides, we have found the anecdote.
Ice cream.
Of course! Because who doesn’t love ice cream?
Rain or shine, good day, bad day.
A man once so health cautious, (and had no problem judging others for their own food choices), finds comfort in ice cream. He eats his eggs with the enthusiasm of a timid tarsier, but ice cream… not his beloved ice cream.
Why, we wonder? Perhaps it's nostalgia. Maybe he loved it as a boy. Perhaps it’s the dopamine hit that happens when the combination of flavors and cold hits his tastebuds. A sudden freedom and disregard for the pain he can’t verbalize, even for just a short moment. Too much of a good thing is bad, and while we recognize that to be true… We have to admit his newfound love for ice cream gives us the permission to live a little.
In fact, it might be the inspiration behind the new direction for Dekada80.
As a family, working in the beauty industry has always been our first love. Exciting new things are already in development at Cuttin’ Loose Hair and Nails Studio. It’s only right that our second love, the joy of bringing people a nostalgic place to kick back and eat good food, deserves its own refresh.
Or should we say, ‘refreeze.’
So, what is this new direction?
Dekada 80's has always been dedicated to quality. Our menu was thoughtfully crafted by two young and talented girls, Rachelle Cuervo and Mary Joy Bantanto to bring joy to many folks right in the heart of Silliman University.
Our humble bistro was a mainstay for book clubs, card game hangouts, board game evenings, movie nights, dream interpreters, bloggers, and student-led meetings for a brighter future. A meeting place for NOPH Auxiliary and Rotary East Dumaguete City. Auditions and table reads for artists happened here, including Salome.
We couldn't be more grateful for the many walks of life that entered our cozy bistro for a bite.
From the bottom of our hearts, we thank you.
Especially to our friends here Harolds Mansion for making this transition so smooth and possible for us. 🦋
It's bittersweet, but because of our situation at home with Terry as well as our 102 year old Nanay who is still fighting the good fight, Dekada80 bistro is taking a small step back but a giant leap forward.
We've decided to grow smaller. The time calls for us to bloom in the place known for flowers, Valencia. And in our delighted disposition in downsizing, we introduce to you;
Dekada80's Homemade Ice cream.
Our new home nestled in the cozy town of Valencia is only four minutes from the big white house. Convenient enough for the family to go back and forth, juggling responsibilities at home.
Maria and Edco, the OG's of Dekada80s Bistro can enjoy it the way they wanted. Mag istambay.
We will still be delivering the best sellers. Our chicken sandwich, chicken wings, burgers and more.
Our bistro with a 'flair for nostalgia' will take on a frozen new twist.
And nothing says the 80's like: ICE CREAM!
With this new pivot ice cream flavors will serve not only 80's lovers, but people of all decades.
And Terry, despite the foggy memories, one hundred percent approves. This is not farewell, but a huge thank you for your support on our next endeavor.
