Pallet Racking Systems :
How to Choose for Your Requirements:
Pallet racking organizes palletized goods to balance storage density, accessibility, and handling method.
Choose a system based on SKU mix, turnover, space, equipment, and budget.
Main types and when to use them:
Selective racking — Flexible, direct access to every pallet; best for many SKUs and mixed turnover.
Drive‑in / Drive‑through — Very high density for homogeneous SKUs; low selectivity (LIFO or FIFO).
Push‑back — High density, LIFO; good for bulk pallets like beverages.
Pallet flow (gravity) — High density FIFO; ideal for perishables and high-turnover SKUs.
Double‑deep — Moderate density increase over selective; requires reach trucks.
Cantilever — For long, non‑palletized loads (lumber, pipes).
Mezzanine racking — Adds usable floor levels for picking or light assembly.
Mobile (movable) racking — Maximizes floor space by opening one aisle at a time.
Automated systems (shuttle, AS/RS) — Highest density and throughput; best where automation ROI and integration with WMS/WCS make sense.
Many SKUs → Selective;
Few SKUs, many pallets → drive‑in/push‑back/flow.
Rotation needed: FIFO → Pallet Flow or Drive‑Through;
LIFO acceptable → Push‑Back or Drive‑in.
Space limits: use mobile, double‑deep, drive‑in, or AS/RS for tight floor area.
Equipment: match aisles to forklift/reach truck or automation.
Budget vs ROI: low capital → selective; high automation ROI → AS/RS.
