Pancreatic cancer is one of the hardest cancers to treat, partly because of a tiny group of "cancer stem cells" that survive chemotherapy and later drive the tumor back. A study found that bitter melon juice may strike exactly at that weak point.
In the research, bitter melon juice shrank tumor-like clusters of pancreatic cancer cells, lowered several proteins those stem cells rely on to survive, and even made gemcitabine-resistant cells respond to treatment again. Targeting both the bulk of the tumor and its hidden stem cells is something many treatments struggle to do.
This work was done in laboratory and animal models, so it points to a promising direction for future drugs rather than a remedy you can drink, and bitter melon should never replace cancer treatment. Still, it is a striking example of why scientists keep studying humble vegetables for clues against our toughest diseases.
