LEAP for Iligan and CEMO Bring Sustainable Urban Gardening to BJMP

In a strong show of inter-agency collaboration, Leap for Iligan, in partnership with the City Environment Management Office (CEMO), conducted a training on Sustainable Urban Gardening with Emphasis on Waste Management at the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP).

Under the leadership of EnP. Virgilio Encabo and with Ms. Stella Brameda serving as the lead focal for the city’s greening program, the initiative trained over 50 persons deprived of liberty — including 15 women and more than 35 men — on sustainable agriculture practices and proper waste handling.

This program forms part of the city’s broader thrust toward environmental stewardship and inclusive rehabilitation. By turning idle jail spaces into green, productive areas, the partnership showcases how sustainability and second chances can go hand in hand.

LEAP for Iligan

The Livelihood and Entrepreneurial Agriculture Program (LEAP) was launched in 2018 by Margeuries House of Goodies, an ATI-accredited School for Agriculture (LSA II), in partnership with then Office of the Congressman Frederick W. Siao.

Key Programs:

- Life Skills Training: In partnership with TESDA and TVIs, providing farmers with agribusiness and entrepreneurial skills.

- Mobile Store Initiative, initiated March 2020: Addressed pandemic logistics by collecting farmers' produce from the hinterlands and distributing it to urban residents, ensuring food security and income for farmers.

- Biofertilizer Project: Collaborated with LGU Iligan and Uma sa Ilaya to convert biodegradable waste into organic fertilizers, promoting sustainable farming.

Vision: Empowering farmers, fostering sustainability, and driving Iligan's agricultural growth through innovation and collaboration.
