"LECHON MANOK WAS ONCE A LUXURY. NOW IT’S SOMETHING WE CAN FINALLY AFFORD."

I read that, and it hit me deeper than I expected.

Growing up in the rural areas, lechon manok wasn’t just food. It was a dream. Something you only smelled when someone in town had a little extra, something you only tasted on fiestas, birthdays, or when a miracle happened.

Back then, money was tight, roads were rough, and choices were few.

When you’re poor and far from the city, even simple things feel out of reach.

You learn early how to stretch rice, how to be grateful for tuyo and sabaw, how to tell yourself “okay lang” when you want more but can’t ask for it.

So today, when I pass by a lechon manok stand and realize I can actually buy one, I don’t just see roasted chicken. I see how far we’ve come. I see the child in me who used to look from a distance, quietly wishing, quietly hoping.

It’s not about the food.

It’s about finally having a little room to breathe knowing that the struggles of that rural kid weren’t for nothing.

And to those who grew up like me with muddy roads, empty pockets, and big dreams, this is for you.

For every time you went to bed full of hope instead of food. For every day you survived when life was already hard.

Now we can afford lechon manok. But more than that, we earned the right to say:

WE MADE IT THROUGH.
