Today, weโre handing the mic to 3/๐ ๐๐จ๐ฉ๐ ๐๐ฌ๐ญ๐ข๐ง๐จ๐๐จ. We caught up with him to dive into the hidden gems heโs discovered across the globe and the wisdom heโs passing down to the next wave of cadets ready to take the helm.
When we asked about his ultimate port of call, Sir Pope didn't skip a beat. While others stayed behind, he turned a brief layover into a masterclass in seizing the moment.
"In my recent joining, we had an 8-hour layover in Paris. Nobody wanted to go out with meโmaybe because they were tired, considering the cost, or simply assessing that the risk wasnโt worth it. I totally understand that.
But as an adventure ju**ie, I went out alone.
That moment made France my favorite country Iโve visited so far. Itโs sentimental to me because I joined my first vessel in Le Havre, and back then I didnโt get the chance to see the Eiffel Tower when I first passed through Paris.
Coming back years later felt like a nostalgic serendipity.
From being a Cadet who had access to the world but limited capability to explore it, Iโve grown into an Officer bold enough to maximize what is, for me, the epitome of seafaringโto travel the world. I now have the experience and confidence to pursue things that were once held back by fear.
Iโve learned that I will always fear losing chances more than going out alone. Besides, the selfies arenโt that bad. ๐
At the end of the day, how can I be afraid of going out alone when I do risk assessments and voyage planning for a living?"
But the journey isn't just about the sightsโit's about the mindset. For the cadets currently hitting the books and dreaming of the bridge, Sir Pope shares a powerful perspective on the age-old maritime debate: Talino vs. Diskarte.
"Thereโs always this endless debate between talino and diskarte.
But I stand firm in the idea that graduating with honors or at least with good grades is already a form of diskarte. What many people miss is that the essence of diskarte is still how the mind works. Itโs still a mental game.
Many seafarers say diskarte worked for them. But from my personal experience, talino and diskarte worked better for me.
If we define them as separate things, imagine how powerful you can become if you have both."
Don't just wait for the tide to turnโnavigate it. Whether it's exploring a new city solo or mastering your maritime studies, the goal is to become an officer who is as sharp as they are bold.
