HOW WE STARTED BREEDING GAMEFOWL.
I started breeding gamefowl because of my childhood experiences and the strong influence of my family.
When I was a kid, my father had a few gamefowl in our backyard. He would enter them in tupada fights, and I remember watching and feeling excited and proud. Seeing how he cared for and prepared his birds made a big impression on me. That was the first time I became interested in gamefowl.
At the same time, my grandfather had a large farm with cows, and he also kept many native chickens roaming around. He owned a well-bred pedigree gamefowl that we called “Texas.” Texas was a grey, dark-legged brood stag. Because the chickens were free range, the native hens were naturally crossed with him.
Most of the offspring came out grey, many with yellow legs. They were smart and fought well. I was very impressed with their performance and intelligence. That was when my interest became more serious.
Since I really liked sabong, I asked my grandfather if I could have one stag from the Texas brood crossed with a native hen. He gave me one. That stag won three times for me before he eventually died of old age.
That experience inspired me deeply. From that moment My Dad and II decided to start breeding our own gamefowl.
