The road to a crunchy and yummy MAKAN™ Lumpiang Shanghai is not a difficult feat.

You only have to remember three basic steps ---
➊ From 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐳𝐞𝐧, 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐰 Lumpiang Sanghai in room temperature,
➋ Make sure that 𝐜𝐨𝐨𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐨𝐢𝐥 in the pan is 𝐡𝐨𝐭 𝐞𝐧𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡 before putting in Lupiang Sanghai to fry, and
➌ 𝐋𝐞𝐚𝐯𝐞 the fried Lumpiang Shanghai 𝐢𝐧 𝐚 𝐬𝐢𝐞𝐯𝐞 for at least 2-3 minutes to remove excess oil.

And .... voila!

Why is it called 𝗟𝗨𝗠𝗣𝗜𝗔𝗡𝗚 𝗦𝗛𝗔𝗡𝗚𝗛𝗔𝗜?

Because the 𝐋𝐮𝐦𝐩𝐢𝐚 originated from the Fujian Province in China, it does not really make sense why it is now called "𝑳𝒖𝒎𝒑𝒊𝒂𝒏𝒈 𝑺𝒉𝒂𝒏𝒈𝒉𝒂𝒊". There is no evidence in history that the Lumpia have any connection to Shanghai City.

But then, it is speculated that Filipinos have started calling the dish as 𝗟𝗨𝗠𝗣𝗜𝗔𝗡𝗚 𝗦𝗛𝗔𝗡𝗚𝗛𝗔𝗜 to distinguish it from other dishes alike such as the turon and the lumpiang sariwa.

In any important Filipino occasion --- birthdays, Christmas and New Year --- LUMPIANG SHANGHAI is ever present at the table. It may not be the main star of the food table such as the cake and the lechon but we cannot imagine the festivities without the renowned LUMPIANG SHANGHAI.

As Pinoys, who will always enjoy every crunch of every bite of this delectable food, we need to take a closer look at the journey that the LUMPIANG SHANGHAI have gone through towards winning our hearts (and our tummy!😁) every time. 😊

LUMPIA IS CHINESE FOOD TURNED INTO FILIPINO FOOD
Lumpiang Shanghai's roots can be traced back to the Fujian Province in China. A dish called “Popiah” (cooked vegetables and meat wrapped in thin pancake) is popularly eaten in the Fujian Province and its neighboring regions during the Spring Festival, or what we have come to know now as Chinese New Year. In consequence, Popiah is also called "spring rolls".

Lumpia may have been originally Chinese, but by recipe, it is a Filipino food. Over time, the authentic Chinese flavor in Lumpia is lost as it caters more to the Pinoy taste buds.
