Genetics + Nutrition = Marbled Wagyu & Champion Gamefowls!

On the way home from Manila today, I bumped into Bebot Uy, one of the country's top gamefowl breeders, at NAIA 2.

We talked about the breeding of Wagyu and he asked if the Philippine Wagyu could produce Marbled Beef like those from Australia.

I said "Yes" but qualified it by using his champion gamefowls as an example.

It depends on two factors - Genetics and Nutrition, I told him.

His famous Greys carry genes which make them winners but without proper feeding and rearing, the champion genes mean nothing.

Since we are both farmers who have profound knowledge of Breeding and Practical Genetics, he easily understood the comparison.

You may have the best Wagyus but if you don't feed them well, you will never achieve the desired marbling.

You may have the best Mel Sims Greys but if they are not given the proper nutrition and care, they are just as good as the ordinary meat chicken.😃

26 Years Of Richard Bates Grey, From Davis, Oklahoma To Kidapawan City, Philippines!

Twenty-six years after I made a 3-day trip from Los Angeles, California to Davis, Oklahoma, I still keep what I consider as the best Grey blood I had as a backyard gamefowl breeder.

The Bates Grey which I acquired from Larry Carter when he was based in Davis is not a picture-perfect fowl.

Silver Grey and Blue-Legged, the Bates are predominantly Peacombed with a Straightcombed popping out very rarely.

What I like about the Bates Grey is the gameness and the ability to break on top of the other fowls.

This season I'm breeding the Bates with Joe Goode Greys I got from Paul Batoon of California.

The Bates Greys, the Jim Clem Ray Price Blacks and the Spangled will remain as the main lines I will perpetuate in the farm.

Philippine Asils Used In Naked-Heel Matches By The Bangsamoros In Southern Philippines.

The Asils, known locally as "Parawakan," were believed to have been brought to the Southern Philippines from Pakistan and India in the 14th Century.

They are used in an Indigenous sport where the Asils fight for hours inside a circular pen.

This breed is deep game and it was the late Congressman Ramon Mitra, who became Speaker, who used the Asils in his breeding program.

He produced the famous Mitra 56 which for years was dreaded in the local pit because of its fighting style.

(My bad. Yes, thank you FB friends for reminding me that the late Speaker Ramon Mitra bred these fowls and produced the spectacular Mitra 56!)

I might try it next breeding season to produce Blues.

Gamefowl Breeding Is Practical & Applied Genetics!

It is among Gamefowl Breeders where you find so many ordinary farmers who understand Genetics better than those who studied it in college.

Just like George Mendell and his "Peas in a Pod" proof of genetic uniformity, a gamefowl breeder could produce a clutch of chicks which will look exactly the same when they mature as roosters or hens.

The Gamefowl.Breeder can produce chicken with feather colors that they like and physical movements that will win in competition.

This is the aspect of gamefowl breeding that I am deeply involved with.

This is what gives me joy as a gamefowl breeder.

I keep on experimenting which is why I do not produce a lot.

Also, I do not go into commercial breeding because I am not sure how my Fowls will perform in the hands of those who will fight them.

When my roosters win or lose in local competitions, I ask the farm boys how and why.

Their answer would give me an idea on what to do next, a feedback I won't be getting from those who will buy and fight my Fowls.

This is the reason why I don't sell gamefowls and I hope people will understand.

Keeping The Bloodlines!

After a 4-month season to produce a few heads of battle-crosses, we have started the process of ensuring that we will be able to preserve the bloodlines.

In this video, an Imported Black Macrae hen, the last of the 4 hens I acquired from Bobby Jones of Texas, is being bred to an Island-born Macrae.

This will ensure that we will be able to keep the bloodline.

We are doing the same thing for our other important lines.

Joe Goode Grey, Kidapawan City Edition!

There are two families of Joe Goode Greys in the Braveheart Gamefarm now.

One is the white-leg family which came from Paul Batoon of California and the other is the green-leg line which came from Bobby Jones of Texas.

With this two families, we arenow producing a new family of Joe Goode Greys.

The first stag that was produced, shown in this video, has yellow legs white his full-sister retained the leg color of the mother hen.

The white-leg Joe Goode is also being mated with the Blue-leg Richard Bates Greys.

Both cockerels and pullets coming out of this mating have white legs.
