Borrowing money is sometimes necessary. Life can be unpredictable. There are emergencies, unexpected expenses, family problems, and difficult seasons when we may need to ask someone else for help.
But borrowing money also comes with responsibility.
It is easy to make promises when we need something. We say, “I’ll pay you back on this date,” or “Don’t worry, I’ll return it as soon as possible.” But when the time comes and we are unable to pay, some people choose to avoid calls, ignore messages, or disappear completely.
This is where the reminder of Archbishop Abet Uy becomes important.
If you cannot pay on time, do not hide.
Sometimes, the problem is not only the unpaid money. What hurts even more is when trust is broken. The person who helped us may understand our situation—but they cannot understand it if we choose to disappear without saying anything.
Honesty may not immediately solve the financial problem, but it can preserve respect and trust.
If you are struggling, speak honestly. Explain your situation. Ask for more time if necessary. A sincere conversation is always better than avoiding the person who trusted you enough to lend you money.
And for those who have lent money, this can also be a reminder to remember that behind every debt may be someone going through a difficult situation. We should value honesty, responsibility, and compassion.
Money can come and go, but trust is something that takes time to build and can easily be destroyed.
🙏 Pay your debts when you are able. Keep your promises. And when circumstances make it impossible to do so, do not run away from your responsibility. Speak honestly.
Because being responsible does not mean that you will never experience financial difficulties.
Sometimes, being responsible simply means having the courage to face the person, tell the truth, and say:
“I’m sorry. I’m doing my best. Please give me a little more time.”
In a world where disappearing can seem easier than explaining, may we always choose honesty over avoidance and responsibility over excuses.
