Researchers from the University of the Philippines Los Baños are applying advanced genomics and plant breeding techniques to develop improved varieties of Purple Yam. The project, funded by the Department of Agriculture Bureau of Agricultural Research, is led by Dr. Antonio Lalusin of the UPLB Institute of Crop Science in partnership with the Philippine Genome Center for Agriculture.
The research team is evaluating 188 local yam accessions to identify desirable traits such as deeper purple coloration, higher dry matter content, improved yield, and stronger resistance to pests and diseases. Scientists have also begun whole-genome sequencing of elite ube lines, including the widely cultivated Kinampay, to better understand the genetic basis of these valuable characteristics and accelerate breeding efforts.
In Plant Genetics and Crop Science, genome sequencing allows researchers to identify genes associated with important agricultural traits. This can significantly shorten the time needed to develop improved crop varieties compared with conventional breeding alone.
Researchers note that ube remains a high-value Philippine crop with growing international demand, particularly in the functional food and specialty dessert markets. However, production is often constrained by limited availability of quality planting materials. To address this challenge, the project includes large-scale propagation of selected disease-free genotypes for distribution to farmers, processors, and exporters.
The initiative aims to strengthen the country's ube industry by increasing productivity, improving crop quality, and supporting Filipino farmers while helping meet the growing global demand for one of the Philippines' most iconic agricultural products.
