To minimize or prevent piglets from squealing when giving an injection, you need to reduce their anxiety and pain through proper handling and technique.
Here are the effective methods to achieve that:
1. Proper Restraint and HoldingHold securely:
If the piglet is small, lift and hold it firmly but gently under your armpit or between your thighs to prevent movement. Immobilizing them reduces their panic and urge to squeal.
✓ Avoid sudden catching: Startling or chasing the piglets frightens them, causing them to squeal out of fear even before the needle touches them.
2. Using the Correct Needle SizeUse a small needle:
For piglets (sucklings/weaners), use a Gauge 20 or 18 needle with a length of 1/2 to 5/8 inch. A needle that is too large causes more pain and louder squealing.
✓ Change needles regularly: A dull needle hurts significantly more. Change to a fresh needle after every 10 to 12 piglets.
3. Correct Injection SiteInject in the neck:
✓ The safest and least painful area is the neck muscle (Intramuscular), just right behind the base of the ear. Avoid injecting in the ham or hind legs because that area has more nerves and is much more painful for them.
4. Injection Technique:
✓ Fast prick, slow push: Insert the needle in one quick, swift motion so they barely feel the prick. Once inside, inject the liquid slowly, as a sudden rush of medicine expands the muscle tissue rapidly and causes a sharp stinging pain.
✓ Check medicine temperature: If the medicine was stored in the refrigerator, let it warm up to room temperature first. Injecting cold liquid into the muscle is highly painful.
5. DistractionFeed them during the process:
✓If the piglets are slightly older, offer them a small amount of feed or treats to divert their attention while the injection is being administered.
