ONE MINUTE WITH GOD
*SELF-CONTROL*
*What are some steps to learning self-control?*
“For God gave us a spirit not of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.”
*2 Timothy 1:7*
*1 WHAT IS SELF-CONTROL?*
God wants us to exercise self-control over what we *think*, what we *say*, and what we *do*. He wants us to live as *followers of God* – not as mindless followers of the godless ways of the world. We can do this by honestly assessing our weaknesses; determining that they will no longer rule us; appealing to the *Holy Spirit* to help us stand strong against *temptation*; confessing to God with humility when we mess up; and *giving glory to God* when we are victorious.
*2 GOD'S RESPONSE*
*Keep me from deliberate sins!*
*Psalm 19:13*
Keep me from deliberate sins! Don't let them control me. Then I will be free of guilt and innocent of great sin.
_God gives us the strength to say “NO” to sin and to do what is right._
*Help me live in holiness!*

God wants you to be holy, so you should keep clear of all sexual sin. Then each of you will control your body and live in holiness and honor— not in lustful passion.
_True self-control honors God and protects our body, mind, and heart._

All athletes practice strict self-control. They do it to win a prize that will fade away, but we do it for an eternal prize.
_Self-control today leads to everlasting rewards tomorrow._
*3 GOD'S CHALLENGE*
- Say “NO” to sinful desires.
- Control your thoughts.
- Guard your words.
- Manage your physical appetites.
- Live in holiness and honor.
- Do it for an eternal prize, not a temporary one.
*4 APPLICATION FOR MINISTRY*
- Be an example of self-control to others.
- Teach the youth about the importance of self-control.
- Encourage families to live in holiness and honor.
- Pray for strength to resist temptation.
- Practice self-control in speech, thoughts, actions and desires.
- Give glory to God when we are victorious.
