You don’t get the good ones all the time.
In fact, if you’re lucky, you only meet a few in your lifetime
Over the years, this industry introduces you to so many people. Some become coworkers, some become friends, and a very rare few become such a constant part of your everyday life that you stop imagining a version of work without them. James was one of those people.
He was with us for years. Through different chapters of Onlypans, through busy services, celebrations, losses, and all the ordinary days in between. He was always one of the first people to arrive.
The truth is, I don’t think I’ll remember the big moments the most. I’ll remember the little things. Seeing him arrive early. Passing by him during service. Hearing his voice in the kitchen. Knowing he was there. The things that felt so ordinary then and feel so precious now.
Nothing prepares you for waking up and finding out someone you’ve known for years is suddenly gone. There are no words that make sense of it. No explanation that makes it hurt less. Just an emptiness where a familiar face, a dependable teammate, and a genuinely good person used to be.
Our motto has always been Tacos for the People. Looking back, I think James embodied that better than most of us. He was always for the people. For his teammates. For our customers. For anyone who needed a helping hand. He never asked for recognition, never made things about himself. He simply showed up, did the work, and took care of the people around him.
James, thank you for every early morning, every shift, every act of kindness, and every year you spent helping build this little dream of ours. Thank you for being part of our story.
We loved you so much.
I hope you’re up there flipping tacos, getting ready for service before the rest of us, just like you always did. Save a spot at your station, James.
We’ll miss you forever.
Rest easy. Salamat sa puso mo. Maraming maraming salamat.
