Saint Paul, originally known as Saul of Tarsus, was a key figure in the spread of Christianity in the first century. Born around 5 AD in Tarsus (modern-day Turkey), he was a Roman citizen and a devout Jew from the Pharisee sect. Educated under the renowned Jewish teacher Gamaliel, he became a strict follower of Jewish law and initially saw Christianity as a threat. As a result, he actively persecuted Christians, even participating in the stoning of Saint Stephen, the first Christian martyr.

Paul’s life changed dramatically around 33-36 AD when he experienced a divine vision while traveling to Damascus to arrest Christians. According to the Book of Acts, a bright light blinded him, and he heard the voice of Jesus Christ asking, “Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me?” Blinded and shaken, Paul fasted and prayed for three days until a Christian named Ananias restored his sight. This experience led to his conversion, and he was baptized, marking the beginning of his transformation from a persecutor of Christians to one of their greatest advocates.

Following his conversion, Paul dedicated his life to preaching the message of Jesus Christ. He embarked on multiple missionary journeys across the Roman Empire, traveling to cities like Antioch, Ephesus, Corinth, and Rome. He preached to both Jews and Gentiles, emphasizing salvation through faith in Jesus rather than adherence to Jewish law. His teachings also highlighted the unity of all believers and the importance of grace and the Holy Spirit. During his travels, Paul established numerous Christian communities and wrote letters (Epistles) to guide and encourage them. These letters, which include Romans, Corinthians, Galatians, and Philippians, later became a significant part of the New Testament.

Paul faced severe opposition and was imprisoned multiple times for his faith. Around 60-62 AD, he was taken to Rome under house arrest but continued to write and preach. According to tradition, he was executed by beheading around 64-67 AD during the persecution of Christians under Emperor Nero. Despite his death, Paul’s influence on Christianity remained profound. His writings continue to shape Christian theology, and he is often called the “Apostle to the Gentiles” for his role in spreading Christianity beyond the Jewish community.
