Thrilling Riesling — Peter Lauer
Saar region and Lauer family has been working the hillside of Ayl for five generations. Winemaker Florian Lauer is at the helm with a focus on dry-tasting Rieslings as opposed to the residual sugar wines of the latter. Each steep slope has a vineyard parcel that can range up to 100 years old of vine age. These parcels are
vinified separately and embody terroir at the highest level.
All Riesling grapes are picked by hand and employ natural-yeast fermentation from the vineyard and cellar. Then a long and slow fermentation with extensive lees contact –
partly supported by bâtonnage, or lees stirring. The resulting wines are deeply textured, balance, an energy that is singular.
Florian adopts a Burgundy approach in labelling his wines. Barrel X represents a quintessential Saar Riesling, like a "Saar Blanc." The ‘Senior’ series, marked by a green circle on the label, serves as their Village-level wine from Ayler Kupp, crafted from vines averaging 70 years old. Their GG or Grand Crus, indicated by gold circles, showcase unique expressions of individual vineyard sites such as Unterstenberg, Kern, and Neuenberg.
