The 21-Day Chicken Embryo Development Process
The development process, whether under a broody hen or in an artificial incubator, requires consistent warmth (around 99.5°F) and appropriate humidity.
Days Development Inside the Egg
Day 1 Cell division begins, and the first signs of the embryo's disk develop.
Days 4-6 Major organs and physical features begin to form; the heart starts beating, and the brain and body become distinguishable.
Days 7-10 Wings, feet, and toes are well developed, and feather tracts appear. Around this time, the egg can be "candled" (shining a light through the shell) to check for growth.
Days 12-13 Down feathers appear, bone calcification begins, and scales on the legs become visible.
Days 18-20 The chick is fully grown and occupies almost all the space inside the egg, except the air cell. The yolk sac is absorbed into the body, providing essential nutrition after hatching. Chirping can often be heard from inside the egg.
Day 21 Hatching Day. The chick uses a temporary bump on its beak called an "egg tooth" to break through the internal membrane and then the outer shell. This process, called "pipping" and then "unzipping," can take several hours.
Once hatched, the chick is wet and tired. It will dry off and fluff up within the incubator or under the hen before moving to a brooder to begin the next stage of its life cycle.
