La Union’s New Era of Water Security: The Poro Point Desalination Plant
The province of La Union has taken a massive leap forward in infrastructure with the recent commissioning of its brand-new seawater desalination facility inside the Poro Point Freeport Zone (PPFZ). Officially inaugurated on February 12, 2026, this project introduces advanced water technology to San Fernando City. Operated and maintained by Poro Point Summa Water, Inc. (PPSWI)—a subsidiary of the MacroAsia Group—the facility marks a turning point for sustainable resource development in the region.
Prior to this milestone, the expansive 236.5-hectare economic zone lacked a dedicated water utility concessionaire or an integrated pipeline network to serve its growing community. The newly established facility bridges this critical infrastructure gap by pulling raw seawater from the coast and converting it into a dependable, high-quality potable bulk water supply. It boasts an initial capacity of 500 Cubic Meters per Day (CMD), and features an expandable design constructed to scale effortlessly alongside local economic development.
Built through a 15-year lease agreement between the Poro Point Management Corporation (PPMC) and Summa Water Resources, Inc., the plant required zero direct cost from the government, showcasing a highly successful public-private collaboration.
While its immediate commercial pipeline serves prime locators like the Poro Point Agro-Industrial Development Company, the plant establishes a resilient foundation for the entire region. This innovative project ensures that La Union remains a highly competitive, future-ready hub for business, tourism, and local living.
