WHAT DO THE THREE DOTS TATTOO OF APO WHANG-OD MEAN?

The three-dot tattoo (•••) worn by the legendary Kalinga tattoo artist Apo Whang-od Oggay is one of the most recognizable symbols associated with her. While many visitors admire and even receive this simple design, its meaning is often misunderstood.

Traditionally, the three dots represent Apo Whang-od herself and the two generations of women who will continue the ancient Kalinga tattooing tradition. The dots symbolize the continuity of her lineage as a mambabatok (traditional hand-tap tattoo artist):

Second dot – Grace Palicas, her grandniece and apprentice
Third dot – Elyang Wigan, another grandniece and apprentice
