The expression "Itadakimasu" literally means โI am going to receive the lives of animals and plants for my own lifeโ, and saying this phrase before eating is a way to express your understanding of how much was sacrificed to make the meal possible as well as to express appreciation for Mother Nature. In a mealtime setting, it's compared to "Let's eat," "Bon appรฉtit," or "Thanks for the food." ๐
