The Start of Our Mango Production Season

We officially started our mango production season last October 15. Our first task is to encourage our trees to flower and prepare them for a productive harvest.

This Sunday morning, we were up early again to apply our second foliar spray of Calcium Nitrate, just days after the first application.

During the early flowering period, mango trees may respond less strongly to flower induction when the soil is still wet and the trees have not yet experienced sufficient water stress. Timing our applications carefully is therefore an important part of our flowering strategy.

Our experience has shown that a second application within three days can improve the flowering response. By following this approach, we aim to encourage more uniform flowering across our mango orchard.

Why do we spray early in the morning?

🌱 Better conditions for foliar absorption. Early mornings are generally cooler and more humid, helping spray droplets remain on the leaves longer before drying. Leaf stomata may also be open under suitable conditions, potentially contributing to foliar uptake. Calcium absorption, however, also depends on the leaf surface and the formulation being applied.

💨 Minimal wind for better spray coverage. Early mornings are often calmer, allowing our fine spray droplets to land on the mango leaves instead of being blown away by the wind. This helps us achieve better spray coverage while minimizing spray drift.

Every application is carefully planned as we work toward our goal of achieving strong flowering and a productive mango season.

From Batungbacal Farms to the tables of Zambales!

Our customers have given a name to the eggplant we proudly grow at Batungbacal Farms: Talong ni Bato! And we couldn't be happier with the love behind it.

We started growing eggplant for the local market here in Zambales with a simple mission: to bring freshly harvested, high-quality, delicious, and affordable vegetables closer to our fellow Zambaleños.

By cutting out the middlemen and selling directly to consumers, we can offer our eggplants at prices 30% to 40% lower than what they would normally pay. And the response? Absolutely heartwarming!

Wherever we go, we are mobbed by enthusiastic buyers. Imagine selling 600 kilos of eggplant in just one afternoon! That's how much our customers appreciate what we bring to their tables.

Now, they're asking us to grow other vegetables, too. And that makes us even more excited about what lies ahead!

Who would have thought that an ordinary vegetable like eggplant, when grown with care and harvested at the right time, could find its way into the hearts of so many everyday Zambaleños?

For us, this is more than just growing and selling vegetables. It's about making fresh, delicious quality produce accessible to our community, giving consumers better value for their money, and building a closer connection between our farm and the people we serve.

BATCH 26-03 XINJIANG HAMI MELONS | DAY 9 🌱

Nine days after transplanting, we are back in the field to inspect the progress of our Xinjiang Hami Melons!

After carefully considering the weather conditions we have been experiencing and the forecast for the coming days, we have decided not to install our plastic tunnel system. For now, we believe that the favorable weather conditions will allow us to continue growing our melons in the open field.

We have also been reviewing some of our farming practices, from seedling tray sizes to our fertilization program. By combining our soil test results, fertilizer application records, and photos of our plants' growth, we are using AI as another tool to help us make better-informed decisions.

This process has also helped us revisit certain aspects of our practices and identify areas that may need improvement. We know there is still much to learn, and we are continuously observing, evaluating, and adjusting as our plants grow.

Farming is a continuous learning journey. We may not have everything figured out yet, but every planting season brings new opportunities to improve. We are excited to explore how technology and traditional farming knowledge can work together to help us grow better Hami Melons at Batungbacal Farms!

BATCH 26-02 TAIWAN HAMI MELON 🍈

19 Days After Transplant | Batungbacal Farms

Our Taiwan Hami Melons are now 19 days after transplant, and we are encouraged by their progress. The vines have reached their 10th leaf node, and we are preparing for the next important stage: flowering and fruit setting.

We have pruned away the side shoots from the 1st to the 4th leaf nodes so that fruiting will begin at the 5th node onwards. At this stage, we expect the plants to have developed a stronger root system capable of supporting healthy fruit development.

Male flowers are now starting to appear, and we anticipate the first female flowers and initial fruit setting within the next week.

Our goal is to achieve the right balance of nutrients and water to support successful pollination, fruit setting, and early fruit development. We are targeting four fruits per plant, weighing approximately 2.5 kg each. If our plants prove strong enough to support a heavier fruit load without compromising fruit size and quality, we may consider allowing additional fruits.

We continue to experience occasional afternoon rains lasting around 30 minutes to an hour. Fortunately, the overall weather has been favorable since the last week of September, helping our young melons establish themselves in the field.

The coming days will be critical. We will continue monitoring vine growth, flowering, soil moisture, and plant health as we prepare for fruit setting.

Every stage matters, and we are taking it one day at a time toward a successful Hami melon harvest.

🌱 PAPAYA UPDATE: EVERY DAY BRINGS US CLOSER 💚

We like what we see as we count down the days to harvest!

Although we still have a long way to go, we are encouraged by the vigor of our papaya plants and the fruits we’ve been closely monitoring as they continue to develop.

After the challenges and disappointments of our previous batches, seeing our papayas grow stronger and watching the fruits develop gives us renewed hope and excitement. Every new fruit is a little reminder that patience, perseverance, and the right care can bring us closer to our goal.

We’re not at the finish line yet, but we’re enjoying every step of this journey — and we’re happy to share it with all of you who have been waiting for our papayas. 💚

8 DAYS AFTER TRANSPLANT 🌱🍈

Every morning when we wake up, we are excited to see our Hami Melons.

We walk along the rows, closely inspecting each plant—looking at their growth, their leaves, and their overall health. There is something special about seeing how much they have changed overnight.

From noon until around 3 PM, when the sun is at its hottest and our young plants can experience stress, we watch them even more closely. We look for the ones that need a little extra attention, a little more water, or simply a little more care.

Now, at 8 days after transplant, we are encouraged by what we see. They are growing quite well.

Our plants may not be able to speak, but they communicate with us in their own way.

They talk through their leaves.
They talk through their new flushes.
They talk through their stems.

And right now, it seems they are telling us:

“We are happy. We are growing.” 🌱💚

We will continue to watch over them, one day at a time, until the day we can finally share the fruits of all this care with you.

🌱 PAPAYA UPDATE FROM BATUNGBACAL FARMS 🌱

What a difference a week can make! 💚
Our papayas have grown so much, and we’re very happy to see fruit setting continuing steadily on our female papaya plants the ones that produce the beautiful, round-shaped fruits. 🥭

Our hermaphrodite plants, which produce the longer-shaped papayas, are growing well too. We haven’t seen fruiting from them yet, but we’re patiently watching and waiting. 🌿

For those who have been waiting for our papayas, we know you’ve been waiting a long time. After the challenges and failed batches we experienced before, seeing these little fruits develop is especially meaningful to us.

We’ll continue doing our best to nurture them, one day at a time.

🙏 Let’s continue to pray for good weather, healthy plants, and an abundant harvest so we can finally share plenty of our papayas with everyone who has been waiting.

After 10 days of carefully growing our seedlings in trays, today is the day they move to their new home.

We gathered our people with the greenest of thumbs and put our hands to work, carefully transplanting each young Hami Melon seedling into the beds we prepared for them.

From here, they have about 60 days of growing, nurturing, and caring before we hope to bring them to harvest and, eventually, to your tables.

Our customers have grown to love these Hami Melons, and as always, we listen to what you wish for.

PAPAYA UPDATES

We have been receiving a lot of inquiries from our customers about our papaya production and we would like to share that we have seen the FIRST FRUITS setting from several of our plants! Flowering is likewise continuous which will assure continuous fruiting.

We will continue to monitor them daily and adjust our work to give the best care.

Wait for more updates in coming weeks and months until we reach harvest time by January 2027.
