Kalsada Kalsada champions Philippine specialty coffee. Roasting in Manila and exporting to the US and France. [email protected]

We are a global team connected by a passion for high-quality coffee and a belief in giving producers a fair price for their hard work. Our journey began with a photograph of Philippine coffee being sold in Seattle's Pike Place Market in 1909. It led us on a mission to bring the Philippine coffee industry back to its former glory, one farm at a time. We partner with farmers to help them reach the h

ighest potential for their coffee. Our unique approach moves beyond fair trade and organic labels and values integrity and community above all. Our dedication to these principles enables us to connect our consumers with rare and exceptional coffee.

Our new harvest from Benguet just arrived in Manila.

It’s a smaller one this year, only 40% of last season’s volume. A mix of things played into this low yield: the weather, aging trees, and the realities of crop management on the ground. Logistics hasn’t made things easier either, with fuel costs hitting us hard.

This season asked a lot from everyone, and our team and partner farmers in Benguet showed up all the same. We’re grateful to have seen it through together and we’re hopeful for a better season ahead of us.

We’re excited to finally get these coffees moving toward our partners, and into your cups.

New harvest from Bukidnon and South Cotabato is on its way to Manila!

We are grateful for our Bukidnon team for the care and dedication behind every step of the process during this extra-challenging harvest season.

With fuel prices climbing week after week, local logistics have surged, now nearly 80% higher than last year. While conditions don’t look like they’ll ease anytime soon, we’ve chosen to stay the course and keep these coffees moving according to schedule.

Even conflicts happening thousands of miles away can reach coffee farms in the Philippines.

With the ongoing geopolitical conflict in the Middle East, we’re already seeing ripple effects across the coffee supply chain. Rising fuel prices are increasing the cost of moving coffee, from farms to mills, and from mills to ports. These increases also affect the cost of agricultural inputs that farmers rely on to maintain their farms.

Our fertilizer suppliers have warned us of exponential price increases, and more concerning, the possibility of limited supply because of the war. To prepare, we are stocking up on what we can for the next six months so we can continue caring for our trees.

On the export side, freight prices are rising and several forwarders have already issued fuel surcharges. With higher fuel costs and continued logistical uncertainty, we are also considering delaying some export schedules in the hope that conditions stabilize. This also affects our cashflow, since payments are typically completed once coffees are loaded onto the vessel.

For smallholder coffee producers in the Philippines, geopolitical conflict can quickly translate into higher costs and greater uncertainty across the entire coffee chain.

In July 2024, a farmer in Sitio Naguey allowed us to cut back her old trees and begin a rejuvenation plan. The goal was to show other farmers that this approach works and boosts productivity. Eighteen months later, the trees are ready to bloom again.

As we move toward the end of harvest, we want to share an update from the farms.

This season has been a difficult one for us and our farmer-partners. Yields are currently at 49% of last year’s inventory, caused by a combination of climate conditions, the natural production cycle of coffee trees, and the age of most of the trees.

Despite the challenges of this harvest, our communities remain hopeful. Together, we’re working to find ways to mitigate the effects of the low yield, through shared planning, support, and care for the farms, while looking ahead to healthier trees and better seasons to come.

Even in a small harvest, we’re grateful to share what the farms have produced and thankful for the support that sustains the farmers and their communities.
