A research paper published in April 2021 studied how rivers polluted the oceans.

Philippines was the largest contributing country transferring 356,371 metric tons of plastic waste into oceans every year, through 4,820 rivers.

followed by India with 126,513 metric tons, and Malaysia ranked third with 73,098 metric tons.

China ranked fourth with 70,707 metric tons, and Indonesia followed it with 56,333 metric tons.

Myanmar, Brazil and Vietnam generated 40,000, 37,799 and 28,221 metric tons, respectively.

Bangladesh (24,640 metric tons) and Thailand (22,806 metric tons) were the two whose rivers transported the least plastic waste to oceans.

in your food and cosmetics

has been used for over 2,300 years to create the color red. It's used in lipsticks, blush, textile dyes, and food coloring. The color derived from cochineal can be found in the art of masters like Rembrandt and van Dyck.

If you've worn brands like Dior or Chanel, or consumed strawberry yogurt or pink frosting, you've likely encountered cochineal.

Mesoamerican peoples domesticated the insect, transforming its chemical defense into a valuable colorant. The Aztec, Zapotec, and Mixtec peoples associated cochineal with ancestral magic. In Spain, cochineal was as valuable as silver, and its trade was a state secret, with smuggling punishable by death. Art historians recognize cochineal as one of three pigments that distinguished Medieval art from the Renaissance.

Despite synthetic alternatives, cochineal remains relevant. In 2024, 1,800 metric tons were produced by over 50,000 farmers, primarily in rural Peru.

The market value is projected to reach approximately $78 million by 2032. It is the only organic red approved by the US for use in eye makeup and is difficult to replace.

If you're curious about whether you're wearing or eating cochineal, check product labels for ingredients such as:

Carmine

Cochineal extract

Crimson lake

Natural Red 4

CI 75470

E120

The color red, often derived from cochineal, has historically been associated with significant events and emotions, including treaties, wars, passion, rage, romance, warning, love, and blood.

This powerful color comes from an insect smaller than a fingernail, which has quietly supplied it to the world.
