The second week of our traineeship was filled with valuable lessons that strengthened our trainees' understanding of dairy animal management and calf rearing.
One of the major topics discussed was the basic nutrient requirements of dairy animals. Trainees learned that nutrients are categorized into macronutrients and micronutrients, all of which are essential for maintaining animal health, growth, reproduction, and milk production. They studied the roles of protein, energy (lipids), vitamins, and minerals, while also recognizing the importance of water as one of the most critical nutrients. Water plays a vital role not only in digestion and metabolism but also in supporting optimal milk production.
The trainees also focused on calf rearing, learning that successful calf management begins even before birth. Proper preparation of the dam before calving is essential to ensure a smooth calving process and a productive lactation period. They were taught the importance of calf evaluation, monitoring vital signs, and understanding the critical role of timely colostrum feeding. Providing colostrum within the recommended time frame helps transfer antibodies that strengthen the calf's immune system and support healthy growth.
Another important skill introduced was proper animal restraint and handling. While some modern dairy operations in other countries may have facilities and systems that minimize the need for manual restraint, learning these techniques should never be overlooked. Knowledge of proper restraint remains an essential skill for every livestock practitioner. There may come a time when modern equipment is unavailable, emergencies arise, or specific situations require hands-on animal handling. When that moment comes, it is important to have the knowledge, confidence, and skills to perform these procedures safely for both the animal and the handler.
As future livestock professionals, our trainees were reminded that farming is not only about embracing modern technologies and innovations. It is equally important to learn and appreciate traditional practices that have long served as the foundation of animal husbandry. Modern methods are valuable, but every farm should also have contingency plans and practical skills that can be applied when resources, equipment, or technology are limited. Understanding both modern and traditional approaches prepares our trainees to adapt to different situations and become more capable and resilient livestock managers.
Learning the old and the new, the simple and the advanced, ensures that we are prepared for whatever challenges the industry may bring.

On-the-job training (OJT) provides a well-rounded, hands-on learning experience for all trainees. They are involved in cleaning barns for cows and goats, developing forage areas, maintaining feeding troughs, and mixing proper feeds to ensure good nutrition for the animals. They also assist in taking vital signs, estimating body weight, performing disbudding, and caring for calves to support their health and growth. Alongside daily farm maintenance tasks, they attend and listen to lectures that enhance their knowledge and skills in animal care and sustainable farming practices.
