Father's Day originated in the United States. The first Father's Day was celebrated on June 10, 1910, in Spokane, Washington. It was created by Sonora Smart Dodd to honor her father, who raised their ten children alone after their mother's death. Sonora's idea was inspired by Mother's Day, and she wanted to recognize the important role fathers play in society. In 1972, President Richard Nixon officially made it a national holiday in the United States.
