Döner Kebab: A Turkish Culinary Legacy 🇹🇷

Döner kebab is a proud part of Turkish history, born in the heart of the Ottoman Empire.

Our ancestors have been roasting layered meat on spits for centuries. While early versions were often horizontal, the vertical rotisserie style we know today was developed in 19th-century Turkey. It is most famously credited to İskender Efendi in Bursa around the 1850s.

Even earlier, in 1551, the great Ottoman scientist Taqi al-Din (Takiyüddin Efendi) described a steam-powered device to automatically rotate a meat-roasting spit. This early steam turbine shows Turkish ingenuity in the kitchen, long before the Industrial Revolution.

From Ottoman tables to streets around the world, döner remains a Turkish original. Delicious proof of our rich food heritage.
