What you want to know about Whisky/Whiskey.
1. The Spelling: "Whisky" vs. "Whiskey"
The extra "e" usually indicates the country of origin:
Whisky (No "e"): Used in Scotland, Canada, Japan, and most other international markets.
Whiskey (With "e"): Predominantly used in Ireland and the United States.
Etymology: Both derive from the Gaelic term uisce beatha, meaning "water of life".
2. How It's Made
All true whiskeys follow a multi-step process involving grain and wood:
Malting: Grains (like barley) are soaked and sprouted to convert starches into sugars.
Mashing: The grain is ground into "grist" and mixed with hot water to create a sugary liquid called "wort".
Fermentation: Yeast is added to the wort, turning sugars into alcohol and creating a "wash" (essentially a beer without hops).
Distillation: The wash is heated in copper stills to concentrate the alcohol.
Maturation: The spirit ages in wooden casks (usually oak) to develop flavor and its amber color.
Bottling: Most whiskeys are diluted to around 40% ABV before bottling, though "cask strength" versions are sold undiluted.
