Artificial intelligence may soon become every farmer's smartest assistant. Researchers say AI could transform agriculture by managing crops, livestock, manure, and fertilizer as one connected system instead of separate operations.
Using data from satellites, drones, soil sensors, animal wearables, and computer vision, AI can track how nitrogen moves across farms and recommend the right fertilizer type, amount, timing, and placement. It could also improve livestock feeding and redirect manure to croplands that need nutrients, reducing waste and pollution.
This integrated approach may help curb air and water contamination while lowering emissions of nitrous oxide, a potent greenhouse gas. Although challenges such as high costs and limited data remain, scientists believe AI could make farming more productive, efficient, and environmentally sustainable.
