BRAHMA CHICKEN

The Brahma chicken is a large, dual-purpose breed known for its gentle temperament and impressive size. Originating in the United States in the mid-1800s from chickens imported from Shanghai, it was a principal meat breed until around 1930. Today, it's raised for meat, eggs, and ornamental purposes .

Characteristics:

✅Size: Brahma chickens are one of the largest breeds, with roosters weighing up to 12 pounds (5.5 kg) and hens around 9 pounds (4.5 kg) .

✅Appearance: They have feathered legs and feet and come in various colors, including light, dark, and buff .

✅Temperament: Brahmas are known for their docile and friendly nature, making them good pets .

✅Egg Production: Hens lay approximately 150-200 medium-sized brown eggs per year. They typically start laying at 6-7 months old and may continue through the winter .

✅Climate Tolerance: Their profuse feathering makes them very cold-hardy but less suited to hot climates .

✅Housing: Brahmas need more space than average chickens, with 5-6 square feet per bird in the coop and low perches to prevent leg injuries .

Color Varieties:

✅ American Standard: Recognizes light, dark, and buff varieties .
✅ British Poultry Standards: Include dark, light, white, gold, blue partridge, and buff Columbian .

Care Tips:

✅Provide adequate space and a balanced diet .
✅Ensure the coop is clean and dry to prevent health issues like bumblefoot .
✅Monitor for parasites due to their feathered legs .
