TRIVIA:
Each of these women played a pivotal role in the biblical narrative, ranging from foundational mothers to bold leaders in the early church.
Old Testament
EVE: The first woman and mother of all living; she is central to the story of creation and the fall in Eden.
SARAH: The wife of Abraham and mother of Isaac; she birthed the "child of promise" in her old age, becoming the matriarch of the nation of Israel.
JOCHEBED: Moses' mother; she courageously hid him in a basket on the Nile to save him from Pharaoh's decree, ensuring the survival of Israel’s future deliverer.
MIRIAM: Moses' sister and a prophetess; she helped watch over him as a baby and later led the Israelites in worship after crossing the Red Sea.
RAHAB: A woman in Jericho who hid Israelite spies; her faith saved her family, and she became an ancestor of King David and Jesus.
HAGAR: Sarah’s handmaid and mother of Ishmael; she is the first person in the Bible to give God a name (El Roi, "The God who sees me") after He met her in the desert.
DEBORAH: A judge and prophetess who led Israel; she gave the military command to defeat the Canaanites and went to the battlefield herself.
JAEL: A woman who dealt the final blow to the Canaanite army by killing the general Sisera with a tent peg while he slept in her tent.
Naomi: Ruth’s mother-in-law; after losing her husband and sons, she returned to Bethlehem, where her life was restored through the loyalty of Ruth.
RUTH: A Moabite widow who stayed with Naomi; she famously declared "Your people shall be my people," and her faithfulness led her to become the great-grandmother of King David.
HANNAH: A woman who prayed fervently for a child; God answered her, and she dedicated her son, Samuel, to the Lord’s service as a great prophet.
ABIGAIL: A wise and beautiful woman who intervened to stop David from seeking violent revenge against her foolish husband, Nabal, eventually becoming David’s wife.
ESTHER: A Jewish orphan who became Queen of Persia; she risked her life to approach the King and stop a genocidal plot against her people.
WIDOW of Zarephath: A starving widow who shared her last bit of flour and oil with the prophet Elijah; God miraculously multiplied her food and later used Elijah to raise her son from the dead.
Naaman’s SERVANT GIRL: A young captive girl who told her powerful Syrian master about the prophet Elisha, leading to the healing of his leprosy.
New Testament
ELIZABETH: The mother of John the Baptist and cousin to Mary; she was the first to recognize and proclaim Mary as "the mother of my Lord."
MARY (Mother of Jesus): The young virgin who accepted the call to bear the Messiah; she raised Jesus and was present from his first miracle to his crucifixion and the birth of the early church.
ANNA: An elderly prophetess who stayed in the Temple fasting and praying; she recognized the infant Jesus as the Redeemer and told everyone about Him.
The BLEEDING WOMAN: A woman who suffered for 12 years but was healed instantly when she touched the hem of Jesus’ garment in faith.
MARTHA: The sister of Mary and Lazarus; known for her hospitality, she also made a powerful confession of faith that Jesus was the Christ before He raised her brother.
MARY of Bethany: Martha’s sister; she sat at Jesus' feet to learn and later anointed His feet with expensive perfume to prepare Him for His burial.
MARY MAGDALENE: A devoted follower whom Jesus delivered from seven demons; she was the first person to see the risen Christ and was sent by Him to tell the disciples.
TABITHA (DORCAS): A disciple known for her "acts of charity" and sewing clothes for the poor; Peter was used by God to raise her back to life.
LYDIA: A successful businesswoman (seller of purple cloth) who became the first convert to Christianity in Europe and hosted the first church in Philippi.
PRISCILLA: A tentmaker and missionary teacher who, along with her husband Aquila, mentored the preacher Apollos and led house churches.
PHOEBE: A deacon of the church in Cenchreae; she was highly commended by Paul and likely entrusted to carry the Epistle to the Romans to its destination.
DAUGHTERS of Philip: Four unmarried sisters who were recognized as prophetesses in the early church.
