Sometimes, a business does not begin with a grand plan.
Sometimes, it begins with a vacant space, a simple idea, and the courage to take a chance.
Meet ๐๐๐ง๐๐ฅ๐ฒ๐ง ๐. ๐๐ฅ๐๐ง๐๐๐ง๐จ, the owner of ๐๐๐ค๐๐ซโ๐ฌ ๐๐ข๐ฌ๐ญ๐ซ๐ข๐๐ญ, an entrepreneur whose journey began with a vacant space, a โฑ20,000 capital, and the courage to take a chance.
In 2013, as a fresh college graduate and unemployed, Ms. Plandano never imagined that she would become an entrepreneur. But when she discovered a small vacant space beside Gold Ribbonette Bakeshop along San Nicolas Street, she saw an opportunityโand decided to take it.
She rented the space even before knowing exactly what business she would put up.
That simple decision became the beginning of a journey she would eventually learn to love.
Today, Bakerโs District offers customized cakes, balloon printing, party needs, and cake supplies, helping customers make their celebrations more special and memorable.
Ms. Plandanoโs journey, however, was not without challenges. Managing finances, increasing profits, and finding ways to reinvest in the business tested her determination. There were moments when she doubted herself and wondered if she was on the right path.
The COVID-19 pandemic brought another difficult chapter, with sales slowing down and supplies being delayed. Yet, Jenelyn chose to adapt. As more people started home-based businesses, she found new customers who needed her products and services.
Her entrepreneurial journey was further strengthened through the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), particularly through her participation in the Kapatid Mentor MEโMoney Market Encounter (KMME-MME) Batch 2025.
As a KMME-MME mentee, Jenelyn gained valuable insights and practical knowledge from experienced business mentors on entrepreneurial mindset, marketing, financial management, operations, digitalization, and business strategy. The program helped her better understand the importance of making informed business decisions, managing resources wisely, and continuously adapting to the changing needs of her customers.
She put these lessons into practiceโand the results followed.
Her customer base grew, social media engagement improved, income increased, and production expanded.
From one small space, Jenelyn's business has now grown into two branchesโone focused on cake production and another dedicated to party favors and cake supplies. Her expansion has also created employment opportunities, including a new team of cake artists who share her passion and creativity.
For Jenelyn, success goes beyond financial growth. Her business has provided her family with a more stable business while allowing her to create opportunities for others.
Looking back, she learned one important lesson:
What began as a simple vacant space eventually became a source of livelihood, a growing enterprise, and a platform for creating jobs.
Her message to aspiring entrepreneurs is simple:
Jenelyn's story reminds us that every big business starts somewhere. Sometimes, all it takes is one small opportunity, the courage to take a chance, and the determination to keep going.
