Isang taon na mula nang ginawa ko ang tulang ito tungkol sa Bahay ni Benito.

Sa tuwing ako’y bumabalik, tila binabalot ako ng mainit na yakap ng nakaraan, ang amoy ng nilulutong pagkain sa kusina ng aking ina, ang ingay ng mga kwentuhan sa sala ng aking pamilya, at ang halakhak na umaalingawngaw sa bakuran ng aming mga kasama. Buhay pa ang tatay ko noon, nakaupo sa kanyang paboritong upuan sa harap ng bahay, may ngiting puno ng pagmamahal ang mga mata.

Dito rin ako nagdalaga. Natutong mangarap, humarap sa hamon ng buhay, at pahalagahan ang simpleng ligaya ng pagiging kasama ang pamilya. Sa bawat pintuan at bintanang dinaanan ko noon, naiwan ang bakas ng aking kabataan, na ngayo’y isa nang mahalagang bahagi ng aking pagkatao.

Marami pang hindi nakukwento ang bahay na ito, pero dahil mas pinagtibay pa ang pundasyon nito handa na ang Bahay ni Benito ibahagi ang mga kwento sa mga susunod pang henerasyon.

Iba ang Bahay ni Benito, hindi lang saksi kundi kanlungan rin ng mga alaala.
