97 ARRESTED, P5.5M WORTH OF FISH AND EVIDENCE SEIZED IN MAY 2026 ANTI-ILLEGAL FISHING DRIVE BY PRO 5
The Police Regional Office 5 (PRO5) continues to demonstrate its unwavering commitment to protecting the region's marine resources and safeguarding the livelihood of law-abiding fisherfolk as it intensified its campaign against illegal fishing throughout the month of May 2026.
Under the framework of the PNP Focused Agenda, particularly the Enhanced Managing Police Operations, PRO 5 conducted 51 anti-illegal fishing operations in Bicol, resulting in the arrest of 97 individuals for violations of fisheries and environmental laws.
These operations led to the confiscation of fish catch, fishing equipment, vessels, and other pieces of evidence with a combined estimated value of PhP5,514,940.00. The majority of these successful operations were conducted in the coastal provinces of Camarines Norte, Camarines Sur, Masbate, and Sorsogon—areas known for their rich marine biodiversity and vital fishing industries.
The accomplishment reflects the relentless efforts of PRO 5 personnel who conducted intensified maritime patrols, intelligence-driven operations, surveillance activities, and coastal law enforcement initiatives to deter and suppress illegal fishing activities that threaten marine ecosystems and the livelihood of legitimate fishermen.
These operations were likewise made possible through strengthened coordination and collaboration among various government agencies, local government units, coastal communities, fisherfolk organizations, and concerned citizens who provided timely information and support to law enforcement authorities.
PBGEN Erosito N Miranda, RD, PRO 5 lauded the dedication and hard work of police personnel, maritime units, and partner agencies who continuously work together to protect the region's coastal resources.
"Our accomplishments in the campaign against illegal fishing are a testament to the dedication, vigilance, and professionalism of our personnel who tirelessly conduct operations, patrol our coastal waters, and work closely with our partner agencies and communities. Every violator apprehended and every illegal fishing activity prevented contributes to the preservation of our marine resources and the protection of the livelihood of our fisherfolk," PBGEN Miranda said.
He further stressed that PRO 5 will continue to strengthen intelligence gathering, maritime law enforcement operations, and community engagement initiatives to ensure that violators are held accountable and that the region's natural resources are protected for future generations.
"We remain steadfast in our commitment to enforce the law and preserve the environment. Illegal fishing not only violates our laws but also robs future generations of valuable marine resources. We will continue to intensify our operations, strengthen partnerships, and encourage public participation in reporting illegal activities so that together, we can protect our seas, our environment, and our communities," he added.
Moving forward, PRO5 shall further enhance its anti-illegal fishing campaign through sustained coastal patrol operations, increased maritime visibility, intelligence-driven enforcement activities, environmental awareness programs, and closer coordination with the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR), local government units, and other stakeholders.
As part of its preventive strategy, PRO 5 will also support information and education campaigns aimed at promoting responsible fishing practices, raising awareness on fisheries laws, and encouraging coastal communities to become active partners in environmental protection and conservation efforts.
