We tried in BGC last night. I told the staff that it's our first time there and she gladly helped us on what they offer.
One can choose between rice bowl and a soup bowl. Of course since my sister and I came here to try the soup, we requested her to orient us.
TamJai Mixian has TamJai broth that is non-spicy, tomato broth, malatang, and Chongqing-inspired sour and spicy broth. We've had malatang a lot of time from another establishment so my sister and I tried what is unique to TamJai Mixian - she had the tomato broth and I had the Chongqing-inspired sour and spicy. The spice level is customizable but Chongqing-inspired broth is at the minimum level 3.
We got the ingredients. I was surprised that they offered trays as containers for the ingredients. Ang laki niya hahaha! In terms of variety, TamJia Mixian offers just adequate but when compared to the other famous malatang place - it's somewhat lacking. What I liked though was the ingredients were fresh! I couldn't even smell the raw meat and prawns which was a great thing ๐ So for my soup I got prawns, cheese balls, quail eggs, a lot of mushrooms, and few leaves of bokchoy. I had rice noodles to go with it instead of rice. I also ordered pickled cabbage, and iced lemon tea.
Tbh, I was wary of going because of the reviews on Google Maps. When I tasted the soup, I found it really tasty. The aroma took me to the streets of China so I knew the broth would be good. I also remembered the la mian that I had before that had pickled cabbage - it was salty, sour, and spicy. Hence I liked my order a lot. I just wished that there were more ingredients to choose from. I haven't been to Hongkong's branch so I wouldn't know if it's the same. The broth was comforting, tasty, and hot. I was happy that I didn't make it spicier. I didn't even need to put a lot of condiments too - so I didn't get some of the reviews about this ๐คท๐ผโโ๏ธ
Tomato broth was also good but may not be for everyone. It had that smoky flavor that I liked.
Considering the other establishments have more to offer at lower cost per 100g or 200g, TamJia Mixian is pricier. Will I go back? Maybe ๐
