A black Saanen born from two white purebred Saanen parents is most likely the result of recessive genetics. Although Saanens are known for their white or cream color, the white coat is actually caused by a dominant gene that masks other colors. However, both white parents can still carry a hidden recessive color gene passed down from ancestors long ago. When two goats carrying this recessive gene are bred together, it can combine and express itself in the kid, resulting in a colored offspring, often called a Sable Saanen rather than a true black Saanen.

In short, the black color doesn’t mean the goat isn’t a Saanen, it just shows that hidden color genetics resurfaced. These colored Saanens are genetically the same breed just a color variation that occasionally appears in pure lines.
