Tilapia – A Unique Fish for Aquaculture Farming 🐟🌱

By: Dr M Gulam Hussain

Tilapia has emerged as one of the most versatile and promising fish species for modern aquaculture. Its rapid growth, high productivity, adaptability, efficient feed utilization, disease tolerance, strong market demand and profitability make it highly suitable for a wide range of farming systems.

Tilapia can be successfully cultured in ponds, cages, biofloc, RAS and integrated aquaculture systems, offering opportunities for both small-scale farmers and commercial enterprises. Beyond production, tilapia farming can contribute significantly to food security, employment generation, rural livelihoods and sustainable aquaculture development.

This Series Poster–10 highlights why tilapia is truly a smart choice for profitable, sustainable and inclusive aquaculture farming.

Realized Genetic Gains in Genetically Improved Carp and Tilapia in Bangladesh

By Dr. M. Gulam Hussain

Selective breeding has emerged as one of the most powerful tools for improving aquaculture productivity worldwide. The experience of Bangladesh demonstrates how science-based genetic improvement programs can significantly enhance fish growth performance and farm productivity.

The poster summarizes Bangladesh’s progress in genetic improvement of aquaculture species, highlighting realized gains achieved through selective breeding. It presents approximately 64% genetic gain in harvest weight for GIFT tilapia, 35–39% for genetically improved Rohu (G3), and about 20% for Subarna Rohu (G4). It also highlights two important recent milestones: the GIFT-19 generation tilapia introduced by Eon Aquaculture Limited from WorldFish, Malaysia, in 2025, and the Rohu G-5 strain released by WorldFish Bangladesh in 2026. Together, these advances demonstrate the growing role of genetic improvement in increasing productivity, efficiency, resilience, and sustainability of Bangladesh’s aquaculture sector.

Bangladesh now provides an important model for sustainable aquaculture genetic improvement in Asia and beyond.

Bangladesh Will Produce One Million Tonnes of Tilapia Production by 2050

By Dr. M. Gulam Hussain

Bangladesh’s tilapia sector has the potential to reach approximately 1 million tonnes annually by 2050. Starting from about 354,142 tonnes in 2023–24, an illustrative moderate-growth pathway of around 4% annually projects production to approximately 383,000 tonnes in 2026, 448,000 tonnes in 2030, 663,000 tonnes in 2040, and 982,000 tonnes by 2050.

Achieving this ambition will depend on genetic improvement, quality seed, modern farming technologies, efficient feed and nutrition, climate-smart aquaculture, research and innovation, and strong policy and investment.

The vision is clear: a stronger tilapia industry contributing to Bangladesh’s food security, nutrition, employment and blue economy.

Note: The projection is illustrative and represents an author’s scenario, not an official government forecast.

Future of Tilapia Aquaculture (2026–2050)

By Dr. M. Gulam Hussain

🐟 The future of tilapia aquaculture will be shaped by the convergence of advanced genetics, artificial intelligence, precision aquaculture, climate resilience, circular economy and production systems, and stronger global partnerships. Over the coming decades, genomic selection combined with Genome Editing and use of modern biotechnology can deliver faster-growing, disease-resistant and climate-tolerant tilapia; AI, IoT and big-data analytics can enable smarter feeding, real-time water-quality monitoring, early disease detection and automated farm management; while renewable energy, biofloc, RAS, integrated systems and resource-efficient technologies can reduce environmental footprints. The poster presents an indicative global tilapia production pathway rising from about 7.2 million tonnes in 2026 to approximately 13 million tonnes by 2050, highlighting the need for innovation, sustainable investment, quality seed, capacity building, supportive policies and international collaboration. If pursued responsibly, tilapia can remain a major source of affordable protein, employment, livelihoods and nutrition while becoming an important driver of the sustainable blue economy. The message is clear: innovate today, sustain tomorrow, and feed the future.
