Brahman Cattle selection in Pakistan -

As the Brahman cattle market in Pakistan is getting competitive day by day farmers need to make sure that the bull they are interested in is a good pedigree and can at least be traced back to grandparents if not great grandparents. This will reduce any doubts or ambiguity in the bulls growth at their farm.

Below are a few key factors that farmers must look for in a high quality sound & structurally correct Brahman.

Feet, legs and connected structure are the biggest factors physically affecting longevity. Always start your evaluation at the ground working up a joint at a time. Carefully consider feet, pasterns, hocks, rump, knees & shoulders.

Feet should be big, even-toed, squarely placed, toes pointing straight forward. Feet turned out and not squarely under bull/calf will always put stress on inside toes and inside of the knees. Feet with poor depth of heel is when hoof-skin junction sets too close to the ground.

Pasterns should be strong and flexible allowing cushion & give in foot & ankle. Pastern with too much set, limits depth of heel and adds pressure to the ankle. Pasterns too straight will lack flex and cushion.

Hocks too straight, severely limit flexibility and puts stress on the joints. Too much set to the hock, forces rear feet too far under the bull adding pressure to hip and rump. Hocks turning inwards, does not provide good balance of weight, and places stress on inside toes and ankles.

Correct rump structure should be level from hooks to pin bone which is essential for length of stride. Shoulder set and shape control degree of motion in front end which allows for flexibility.

Determine correct shoulder angle by viewing cattle on the move paying attention to length of stride & rear foot which should step in track made by front foot. Carefully evaluating degree of muscling first through center of the quarter then base width of rear feet as the bull walks.

It is critical to compare base width at the ground to top width to give that masculine balanced shape from behind. Untimely fat loading can mask, change, hide or invent shape of the bull.

Colour is a major factor that eventually decides the final price of your bull so be mindful when buying Brahman bulls or calfs that they are bright red and not pale in colour.
